{"id":77307,"date":"2016-12-15T13:54:15","date_gmt":"2016-12-15T13:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=501b2f97fa62dc571e8c0e6410e3b579"},"modified":"2016-12-15T13:54:15","modified_gmt":"2016-12-15T13:54:15","slug":"press-release-crushing-defeat-for-poachers-as-seized-car-is-destroyed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=77307","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Crushing defeat for poachers as seized car is destroyed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>A car used by poachers has been crushed after a court ordered that it be destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>The Ford was crushed at a Gateshead scrap yard which specialises in destroying end of life and seized vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>It had been seized by Environment Agency Fisheries Enforcement Officers after it was used for poaching in Northumberland.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"targeted-patrols\">Targeted patrols<\/h3>\n<p>It happened in July 2015, when an Environment Agency enforcement officer carrying out targeted covert patrols saw three men in the Haggs Bank area of Wylam just before midnight.<\/p>\n<p>The men were seen to set two nets, before returning at 4am the following morning, when they hauled the nets, which had migratory fish \u2013 salmon and sea trout &#8211; caught in them.<\/p>\n<p>At 4.20am the men were stopped at the request of the Environment Agency by police at Wylam Wood Road and arrested.<\/p>\n<p>During sentencing earlier this year at Newcastle Magistrates\u2019 Court, they were fined \u00a380, ordered to pay costs of \u00a3100 and a victim surcharge of \u00a320.<\/p>\n<p>The court also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the fishing equipment used in the incident, as well as the vehicle.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image shows vehicle before being crushed \" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/59368\/Car_post_crush.jpg\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image shows vehicle after being crushed \" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/59369\/Car_crushed.jpg\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"poaching-just-not-worth-it\">Poaching \u2018just not worth it\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Kevin Summerson, Fisheries Enforcement Technical Officer for the Environment Agency, oversaw the destruction of the vehicle last week. He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Poaching is just not worth it. Not only may it result in a fine and criminal record, but also the destruction of property used in the offence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We will not tolerate illegal fishing of any kind \u2013 it undermines legitimate anglers and jeopardises the future of the sport.
