{"id":77465,"date":"2016-12-20T16:19:59","date_gmt":"2016-12-20T16:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=68e4ab2659451b712f696ae8ba92d224"},"modified":"2016-12-20T16:19:59","modified_gmt":"2016-12-20T16:19:59","slug":"news-story-dexeu-minister-david-jones-meets-southampton-port-officials-to-hear-views-on-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=77465","title":{"rendered":"News story: DExEU Minister David Jones meets Southampton port officials to hear views on Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Department for Exiting the European Union Minister, David Jones, has visited Southampton to hear views on the Brexit negotiations and consider some of the opportunities ahead as the UK prepares to leave the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the busiest ports in the country, Southampton plays an important role in UK trade, handling \u00a340 billion of exports, including \u00a336 billion of exports destined for markets outside of the EU.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Department for Exiting the European Union\">DExEU<\/abbr> Minister, David Jones, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As the country\u2019s biggest vehicle handling port and second largest container terminal, Southampton Port has a proud history of serving the local community, Europe and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Known as the \u2018gateway to the world\u2019 the port plays an important role both for UK manufacturers looking to access international markets and cruise passengers travelling across the globe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The government recognises that there may be challenges ahead but is committed to getting the best deal for the UK, including the port and maritime industry.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>UK ports handle an estimated \u00a3511 billion of goods, of which \u00a3228 billion are exports and 30% of those pass through Associated British Ports (<abbr title=\"Associated British Ports\">ABP<\/abbr>), the owners and operators of Southampton Port.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next 5 years <abbr title=\"Associated British Ports\">ABP<\/abbr> plan to invest some \u00a3170 million pounds in the port, securing thousands of jobs and providing a boost to the local economy.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Associated British Ports\">ABP<\/abbr> Chief Executive, James Cooper, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Port of Southampton is the UK\u2019s leading export port and plays an integral part in UK industry supply chains.
