{"id":78832,"date":"2017-02-10T10:57:13","date_gmt":"2017-02-10T10:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=57704761886747b945818cb44b680fa6"},"modified":"2017-02-10T10:57:13","modified_gmt":"2017-02-10T10:57:13","slug":"news-story-steering-uk-innovation-mclaren-announces-new-composites-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=78832","title":{"rendered":"News story: Steering UK innovation: McLaren announces new composites plant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The announcement that <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/cars.mclaren.com\/\">McLaren Automotive<\/a> will open a \u00a350 million composites technology centre in Sheffield to develop carbon fibre chassis for its sports cars is a welcome boost to the UK\u2019s manufacturing industry.<\/p>\n<p>As well as bringing 200 jobs to South Yorkshire the facility will help build new skills and knowledge in the UK to support future innovations in motor manufacturing and materials. Production is being relocated from Austria, where it is currently outsourced.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to saving McLaren an estimated \u00a310 million, there should be an increase by around 50% of the proportion of parts it is able to source within the UK.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bridging-the-gap-between-business-and-academia\">Bridging the gap between business and academia<\/h2>\n<p>The facility is the result of a partnership and combined investment by McLaren, <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.gov.uk\/\">Sheffield City Council<\/a> and the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/\">University of Sheffield\u2019s<\/a> specialist <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amrc.co.uk\/\">Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre<\/a> (AMRC). It will be located near the AMRC, which is part of the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/hvm.catapult.org.uk\/\">high value manufacturing (HVM) Catapult Centres<\/a>, supported by Innovate UK. This will enable McLaren to collaborate and draw from the centre\u2019s composites and materials research capabilities and expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Innovate UK has also supported McLaren on a number of collaborative research and development projects to help drive advancements in HVM.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/innovate-uk-case-studies\">See how other businesses have benefitted from Innovate UK support<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"leading-the-carbon-fibre-revolution\">Leading the carbon fibre revolution<\/h2>\n<p>McLaren has a history of working in composite materials having pioneered the world\u2019s first road car with a carbon fibre chassis. All of its cars now come with this as standard.<\/p>\n<p>Full production will begin at the site in 2020.
