Across 6 of the 10 industry categories in Europe, 11 of the projects honoured have received Innovate UK support.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"winning-projects\">Winning projects<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"industry\">Industry<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Susan Graham, co-founder of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biocarbonengineering.com\/\">BioCarbon Engineering<\/a>, which uses drones and remote sensing to restore woodlands and forests by planting trees quickly and cheaply<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"retail-and-ecommerce\">Retail and ecommerce<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Freddy Macnamara, founder of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/cuvva.com\/\">Cuvva<\/a>. Cuvva\u2019s car insurance model is designed to more accurately represent drivers\u2019 risk profiles. It allows customers to insure their parked car for a base fee and only pay extra when they drive it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dr Miguel Martinez and David Benigson, founder of Signal \" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/61613\/Forbes_30_under_30_company_Signal.jpg\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"media\">Media<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>David Benigson, CEO of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/signalmedia.co\/\">Signal<\/a>, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to provide hyper-relevant real-time content and news to businesses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/case-studies\/signal-media-start-up-transformed-by-university-collaboration\">Watch a video about Signal\u2019s success<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"science-and-healthcare\">Science and healthcare<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Amrit Chandan and Carlton Cummins, co-founders of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.projectaceleron.com\/\">Aceleron<\/a>. This partnership is working to convert end-of-life electric vehicle batteries into safe, cost-effective energy storage for developing regions<\/li>\n<li>Alex Bond, CEO of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.freshcheckuk.com\/\">Fresh Check<\/a>. With fellow Imperial College PhD students, Alex has developed a simple colour-change system for food packaging that alerts consumers to bacterial contamination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"social-entrepreneurs\">Social entrepreneurs<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Julian Melchiorri, founder of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/arborea.io\/\">Arborea<\/a>, which is working to develop biotechnology solutions for urban pollution and wastewater treatment. Its BioSolar Leaf mimics photosynthesis to support energy producing, carbon-neutral buildings<\/li>\n<li>Elena Dieckmann and Ryan Robinson, co-founders of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aeropowder.com\/about-us\/\">Aeropowder<\/a>, who are looking to repurpose feathers from the poultry industry that have traditionally gone to waste, and exploit the naturally high-performance material into new products<\/li>\n<li>Tom Webster, co-founder of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/growup.org.uk\/\">GrowUp Urban Farms<\/a>. With his co-founders Tom has developed an aquaponics system for the sustainable, year-round farming of produce and fish, allowing consumers to locally source their food<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/innovate-uk-case-studies\">See some of the other businesses we\u2019ve helped<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"technology\">Technology<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Victor Dillard and Edward Perello, co-founders of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deskgen.com\/landing\/\">Desktop Genetics<\/a>. The University of Cambridge postgrads marry software innovation with life sciences. They are building an AI to re-engineer the human genome and treat genetic causes of disease<\/li>\n<li>Ankur Modi, co-founder of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statustoday.com\/\">StatusToday<\/a>, offers an AI tool that gives business managers insight into their employees, helping them to improve performance and recognise threats<\/li>\n<li>Timothy Sadler, co-founder, <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/checkrecipient.com\/\">CheckRecipient<\/a>, which uses AI to spot and prevent email data breaches and loss before it happens<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-we-support-businesses\">How we support businesses<\/h2>\n<p>These innovators have benefitted from a variety of Innovate UK programmes, including direct competition funding, innovation vouchers and knowledge transfer partnerships, which connect businesses with a university and recently-qualified graduate to bring in new knowledge.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Elena Dieckmann with the other women in innovation winners\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/61614\/Elena_Dieckmann_of_Aeropowder_with_the_other_women_in_innovation_winners.jpg\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Elena Dieckmann of Aeropowder was one of the winners in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/women-in-innovation-awards-2016-15-female-entrepreneurs-honoured\">women in innovation<\/a> competition, receiving \u00a350,000, a tailored business support package and mentorship.
