{"id":80108,"date":"2017-03-28T11:30:09","date_gmt":"2017-03-28T11:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=b94cfe4fad9a851aec6ef966e71f111b"},"modified":"2017-03-28T11:30:09","modified_gmt":"2017-03-28T11:30:09","slug":"news-story-brain-for-driverless-cars-oxford-spin-out-wins-ft-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=80108","title":{"rendered":"News story: &#8216;Brain&#8217; for driverless cars: Oxford spin-out wins FT award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qdgLCDFg74o\">Oxbotica: imagine the future<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A company spun out from the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/\">University of Oxford<\/a> in 2014 to develop a \u2018brain\u2019 for driverless cars has won a Financial Times ArcelorMittal <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d5608670-ed57-11e6-930f-061b01e23655\">Boldness in Business<\/a> award.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oxbotica.com\/\">Oxbotica<\/a> carried off the \u2018Smaller Company\u2019 award for its achievements in creating artificial intelligence software for the next generation of autonomous road vehicles.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"creating-an-autonomous-control-system\">Creating an autonomous control system<\/h2>\n<p>With support from Innovate UK, Oxbotica has developed an autonomous control system called Selenium. It can work on any vehicle, including forklifts and cargo pods.<\/p>\n<p>The software uses data from laser and camera sensors mounted on the vehicle to find out where it is, what\u2019s around it, and to calculate a safe and efficient route.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/innovate-uk-emerging-and-enabling-technologies\">Find out more about how Innovate UK supports the UK\u2019s emerging and enabling technologies sector.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The technology is already running on Oxbotica\u2019s fleet of vehicles, including a last-mile delivery van, the ESA Mars Rover, and the \u00a38 million <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/gateway-project.org.uk\/\">GATEway<\/a> (Greenwich Automated Transport Environment) project in London.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"creating-value-through-intellectual-property\">Creating value through intellectual property<\/h2>\n<p>Originating from the university\u2019s <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/ori.ox.ac.uk\/\">Oxford Robotics Institute<\/a> (ORI) research group, the company has spurned conventional financing through external investment.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Graeme Smith, CEO of Oxbotica, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We didn\u2019t take the easy money. We\u2019ve got very specific methodology to creating value through intellectual property and opportunities to license that. We stuck steadfastly to that approach. It\u2019s nice to have a big investor but we didn\u2019t want that to change our focus or direction.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/innovate-uk-case-studies\">Learn more about how Innovate UK has helped businesses to be successful.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Oxbotica began with 4 employees and has now grown to 30, with the intention of doubling that number this year.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Smith added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We\u2019ve opened up a third office in Oxford, a full fleet of autonomous vehicles, and a dedicated test track and workshop. Our customer base is expanding rapidly and we\u2019re growing fast to meet this demand.
