{"id":80849,"date":"2017-04-18T10:28:27","date_gmt":"2017-04-18T10:28:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=b8baad9e3474add7a7255b50bcb6ce6f"},"modified":"2017-04-18T10:28:27","modified_gmt":"2017-04-18T10:28:27","slug":"news-story-tech-of-tomorrow-offers-more-convenient-carbon-friendly-living","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=80849","title":{"rendered":"News story: Tech of tomorrow offers more convenient, carbon-friendly living"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>From schemes that promote cleaner, greener travel to online deliveries straight to your car boot \u2013 these are some of the innovative ideas being trialled in Innovate UK\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/first-of-a-kind-deployment-of-innovation-apply-for-funding\">first of a kind deployment competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With more than 70% of people estimated to be living in urban areas by 2040, city infrastructure and design requires a drastic change in order to support a high quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the projects is designed to enable a step change in innovation that will make a real difference to the energy, transport and urban infrastructure of the future. In total, 12 projects will share \u00a318 million to develop their ideas.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-ideas\">The ideas<\/h2>\n<p>Projects are exploring the potential to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>take the flexibility of click and collect even further by delivering orders straight to the consumer\u2019s car boot. This project \u2013 by <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cartap.co.uk\/\">Car Tap<\/a> &#8211; uses new reliable and secure keyless vehicle access technology. The trial will enable 100 customers of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.farmaround.co.uk\/\">Farmaround<\/a> to receive deliveries of organic boxes<\/li>\n<li>address the problem of disposing used batteries \u2013 one of the areas of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/policies\/industrial-strategy\">Industrial Strategy<\/a> Challenge Fund \u2013 by exploring how old Nissan electric vehicle batteries can be used to store peak electricity from UK homes. There will be a 50 unit, 12-month trial led by <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.powervault.co.uk\/\">Powervault<\/a>. Partners include Nissan, Aston University, Hyde Housing, Lyra Electronics, M&amp;S Energy and Solarcentury<\/li>\n<li>ease congestion and problems with parking by operating a virtual loading bay. Commercial vehicle operators will be able to pay to reserve kerb space to load or unload. <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/corporate\/about-tfl\/what-we-do\/roads\">Transport for London Road Network<\/a> (TLRN) is running the trial in Wandsworth, focusing on high-density loading \u2018hotspots\u2019<\/li>\n<li>convert electricity into hydrogen at a mass scale to create affordable, green energy for the transport sector. The trial by <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.itm-power.com\/\">ITM Power<\/a> will provide energy balancing and refuelling for a fleet of 20 fuel cell buses in Birmingham<\/li>\n<li>encourage the adoption and use of electric vehicles by making charging even easier. <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zapinamo.com\/\">ZAPINAMO<\/a> is an easily deployable, rapid charging system. It is trialling 2 solutions:\n<ul>\n<li>rapid charging for up to 20 taxis at once at Heathrow Airport, making it easier to park and charge and improving air quality<\/li>\n<li>a mobile charger to serve 4 Europcar E-Car Club electric vehicles, which comes directly to you as and when you need it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A full list of projects can be found in our list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/innovate-uk-funding-competition-winners-2017\">funding competition winners 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"funding-from-innovate-uk\">Funding from Innovate UK<\/h2>\n<p>The projects are part of a \u00a319 million investment by Innovate UK that invited businesses to test and evaluate new infrastructure technologies in the real world.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second phase of the competition. All of the projects completed a finance and business case in the first phase.
