In March 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/cma-cases\/nhbc-structural-warranties-undertakings-review\">the Competition and Markets Authority (<abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr>) began reviewing historic undertakings<\/a>, agreed with <abbr title=\"National House Building Council\">NHBC<\/abbr> in 1995 following an investigation by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.<\/p>\n<p>This had found that some <abbr title=\"National House Building Council\">NHBC<\/abbr> rules for its registered builders made it difficult for companies looking to offer alternative warranties to enter the market.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr> now proposes amending \u2013 but not entirely removing \u2013 the original undertakings. This follows its review finding that competition from other warranty providers has grown, with house builders buying some or all of their new home warranties from other providers but that <abbr title=\"National House Building Council\">NHBC<\/abbr> still has a very high market share and its competitors remain relatively small in scale.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed new undertakings will ensure that builders who are registered with <abbr title=\"National House Building Council\">NHBC<\/abbr> can continue to buy warranties from other providers, but will remove the requirements for <abbr title=\"National House Building Council\">NHBC<\/abbr> to oversee other warranties.
