20th Anniversary of Hong Kong handover<\/a><\/p>\n

The Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said:<\/p>\n

The first of July marks 20 years since Britain returned Hong Kong to China.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s a moment to reflect on Hong Kong\u2019s immense achievements as a thriving and dynamic city, serving as a gateway to the biggest and fastest-growing markets in the world.<\/p>\n

The rule of law, an independent judiciary, and a free media have all been central to Hong Kong\u2019s success.<\/p>\n

As we look to the future, Britain hopes that Hong Kong will make more progress towards a fully democratic and accountable system of government.<\/p>\n

And I want to stress that Britain\u2019s commitment to Hong Kong \u2013 enshrined in the Joint Declaration with China \u2013 is just as strong today as it was 20 years ago.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve no doubt that Hong Kong\u2019s future success will depend on the rights and freedoms protected by that treaty.<\/p>\n

In that spirit, it\u2019s essential that the principle of \u2018One Country, Two Systems\u2019 should continue to provide the basis of Hong Kong\u2019s way of life into the future.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
