{"id":82601,"date":"2017-07-17T06:01:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-17T06:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=7b683de2029ec6848c8ccb0c4d677530"},"modified":"2017-07-17T06:01:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-17T06:01:00","slug":"news-story-first-big-hs2-contracts-to-build-britains-new-railway-will-support-16000-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=82601","title":{"rendered":"News story: First big HS2 contracts to build Britain\u2019s new railway will support 16,000 jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<ul>\n<li>government confirms plans to extend <abbr title=\"High Speed Two\">HS2<\/abbr> from Birmingham to north-west, East Midlands and Yorkshire<\/li>\n<li>decision announced on the first and second stages of the big construction contracts \u2013 valued at around \u00a36.6 billion and supporting 16,000 jobs<\/li>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"High Speed Two\">HS2<\/abbr> trains set to carry more than 300,000 people a day \u2013 freeing up thousands of seats and creating extra local services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/main-civil-engineering-works-contracts-for-stage-1-of-hs2-phase-one\">winners of the major construction contracts for Britain\u2019s new railway were announced today<\/a> (17 July 2017), with the \u00a36.6 billion contracts supporting 16,000 jobs across the country.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"16,000 jobs will be supported through contract opportunities over the next 6 years.\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/65448\/960-hs2-1600-jobs.jpg\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The huge infrastructure investment covers the main civil engineering work on the first phase of <abbr title=\"High Speed Two\">HS2<\/abbr> between London and Birmingham \u2013 including construction of tunnels, bridges, embankments and viaducts.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Chris Grayling announced the decision to award contracts today, which will mean the new high speed link reaching Birmingham by 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This is a hugely important step in the construction of Britain\u2019s new railway and underlines this government\u2019s determination to deliver an economy that works for all.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"High Speed Two\">HS2<\/abbr> will deliver vital links between some of our country\u2019s biggest cities, helping to drive economic growth and productivity in the north and midlands.<\/p>\n<p>As well as providing desperately needed new seats and better connecting our major cities, <abbr title=\"High Speed Two\">HS2<\/abbr> will help rebalance our economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We will now get on with building the railway, while continuing to ensure affected communities get appropriate support and are treated with fairness, compassion and respect.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>David Higgins, Chairman of <abbr title=\"High Speed Two\">HS2<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"Limited\">Ltd<\/abbr>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This is a huge day for the <abbr title=\"High Speed Two\">HS2<\/abbr> project and for the country. These contracts will support 16,000 jobs here in Britain and will create opportunities for thousands of <abbr title=\"small and medium enterprises\">SMEs<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\"><abbr title=\"High Speed Two\">HS2<\/abbr> was always designed to be much more than just a high speed railway and today we can see the opportunities it brings right around the country &#8211; spreading prosperity, acting as a catalyst for investment and rebalancing our economy 10 years before the railway even opens. Business now has the surety to invest with confidence to build a legacy for Britain.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Around 60% of the 7,000 supply chain contract opportunities are likely to go to small and medium sized businesses.\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/65449\/960-hs2-7000-supply-chain.jpg\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><abbr title=\"High Speed Two\">HS2<\/abbr> could carry more than 300,000 people a day. And with fast trains using the new line, there will be extra space for more trains on the existing rail network.<\/p>\n<p>Benefits will be felt across the network with trains running as far as Scotland and the number of seats available out of Euston in peak hours more than doubled.<\/p>\n<p>In total, construction of the full <abbr title=\"High Speed Two\">HS2<\/abbr> route to the north-west and Yorkshire will create up to 25,000 jobs and 2,000 apprenticeships. Both the invitations to tender (<abbr title=\"invitations to tender\">ITTs<\/abbr>) for the station design services contracts for all 4 Phase One stations and the invitation to participate in dialogue (<abbr title=\"invitation to participate in dialogue\">ITPD<\/abbr>) for the Euston Master Development Partner have been released to shortlisted bidders.<\/p>\n<p>These are significant milestones which show how progress is continuing to deliver stations that will be embraced by the local communities, drive economic growth and provide seamless journeys for passengers.<\/p>\n<p>A series of other HS2 announcements are taking place today.<\/p>\n<p>The Transport Secretary will today publish a Bill to deliver the next phase of HS2, from the West Midlands to the West Coast Main Line south of Crewe.<\/p>\n<p>This means &#8211; subject to Parliamentary approval &#8211; this part of the route can open in 2027, 6 years earlier than planned, to bring the benefits of <abbr title=\"High Speed Two\">HS2<\/abbr> to the north and Scotland sooner.<\/p>\n<p>The Transport Secretary will also confirm the final Phase 2b route, from Crewe to Manchester and Birmingham to the East Midlands and Leeds.
