{"id":82621,"date":"2017-07-17T12:37:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-17T12:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=94ccef5e3dd90fbd21002913de64aa81"},"modified":"2017-07-17T12:37:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-17T12:37:00","slug":"press-release-water-scheme-keeps-river-slea-flowing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=82621","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Water scheme keeps River Slea flowing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The river that gives Sleaford its name is being given a helping hand by the Environment Agency with the switch-on of a groundwater scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Around 1.1 million litres of water a day is being drawn up from an underground limestone aquifer, via a 44-metre deep borehole, and fed into the River Slea, keeping it from drying out.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018augmentation scheme\u2019 ensures the river continues to flow during its driest months, benefiting local habitat and preserving the look and feel of the town\u2019s water environment.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 150 years ago, the river was described as \u201ca never failing source of pure water\u201d but natural and man-made changes to the environment and water cycle saw it dry up for extended periods from the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>The augmentation scheme was established in 1995 in response to calls from the local community, which values the river as an attractive feature.<\/p>\n<p>For most years since, it has been supplementing the flow during the river\u2019s driest months, which tend to be between July and December.  Without it, the river would typically run dry during this period.<\/p>\n<p>Claire Anderson, Environment Planning Specialist at the Environment Agency, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The Environment Agency exists to create better places for people to enjoy and wildlife to thrive.  This scheme achieves both.
