The report covers the period from January to December 2016 and for the first time includes a dedicated section on modern slavery &#8211; a key UK government priority.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>Minister Lord Ahmad hosted a live Twitter Q&amp;A session on 27 July to answer questions on UK human rights work. Read his responses on <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/moments\/890556507980537857\">why human rights matter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This report focuses on how the government is working to protect and promote human rights around the world. It also sets out our 30 Human Rights Priority Countries (<abbr title=\"Human Rights Priority Countries\">HRPCs<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>The key themes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>modern slavery<\/li>\n<li>rights of women and girls<\/li>\n<li>torture and the death penalty<\/li>\n<li>LGBT rights<\/li>\n<li>the increasing pressure faced by civil society organisations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Minister for Human Rights, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In too many countries across the world, human rights and rule of law are neither respected nor valued as they should be.<\/p>\n<p>Standing up for human rights is not only the right thing;
