{"id":82804,"date":"2017-07-20T16:05:12","date_gmt":"2017-07-20T16:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=4ed21d7d45b89c47575ab4f706f9d7d4"},"modified":"2017-07-20T16:05:12","modified_gmt":"2017-07-20T16:05:12","slug":"news-story-new-watchdog-to-close-money-laundering-and-terrorist-financing-loopholes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=82804","title":{"rendered":"News story: New watchdog to close money laundering and terrorist financing loopholes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/anti-money-laundering-supervisory-review\"><abbr title=\"Office for Professional Body Anti-Money Laundering Supervision\">OPBAS<\/abbr><\/a> marks the latest step in the government\u2019s crackdown on money laundering and terrorist financing, working in partnership with the private sector to tackle these threats.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/anti-money-laundering-supervisory-review\">Respond<\/a> to the call for further information on the Anti-money laundering supervisory regime.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The watchdog will raise standards across the supervisory regime, and ensure supervisors and law enforcement work together more effectively to help identify and tackle criminals.<\/p>\n<p>There are 25 <abbr title=\"Anti-Money Laundering\">AML<\/abbr> supervisors in the UK, 22 of which are accountancy, estate agents and legal services providers\u2019 professional bodies. These professional bodies bring substantial benefits to the regime, but having several organisations supervising the same sectors risks inconsistencies which criminals may look to exploit.<br \/>\nResearch shows that serious and organised crime costs the UK at least \u00a324 billion a year.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Office for Professional Body Anti-Money Laundering Supervision\">OPBAS<\/abbr> will work with those professional body <abbr title=\"Anti-Money Laundering\">AML<\/abbr> supervisors to help ensure consistently high standards of supervision, with resources focused on the greatest risks whilst minimising unnecessary burdens on the vast majority of legitimate businesses.<\/p>\n<p>It builds on the 2017 Money Laundering Regulations (<abbr title=\"Money Laundering Regulations\">MLRs<\/abbr>) that took effect last month, and set the standards that <abbr title=\"Anti-Money Laundering\">AML<\/abbr> supervisors must meet.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Office for Professional Body Anti-Money Laundering Supervision\">OPBAS<\/abbr> will have powers to help and ensure professional body <abbr title=\"Anti-Money Laundering\">AML<\/abbr> supervisors meet those standards.
