These aim to make the UK a world leader in low carbon vehicle technology.<\/p>\n<p>They include funding to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>support the UK\u2019s position as a leader in the design, development and manufacture of future batteries for vehicle electrification<\/li>\n<li>set up a new facility to work on new technologies to propel the development of low carbon vehicles, through the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apcuk.co.uk\/\">Advanced Propulsion Centre<\/a> (APC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to the Faraday Challenge opportunities, up to \u00a325 million has been allocated for connected and autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/business-secretary-to-establish-uk-as-world-leader-in-battery-technology-as-part-of-modern-industrial-strategy\">Read the Business Secretary\u2019s announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"a-challenge-to-support-the-low-carbon-economy\">A challenge to support the low carbon economy<\/h2>\n<p>The Faraday Challenge is one of a series of challenges set by the UK government as part of its Industrial Strategy. It will see \u00a3246 million invested in battery technologies over the next 4 years.<\/p>\n<p>A total of \u00a31 billion will be invested across all of the challenge areas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/industrial-strategy-challenge-fund-joint-research-and-innovation\">Find out more about the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"faraday-challenge-competitions\">Faraday Challenge competitions<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"battery-innovation-for-the-electrification-of-vehicles\">Battery innovation for the electrification of vehicles<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-business-energy-and-industrial-strategy\">Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy<\/a> (BEIS) and Innovate UK have up to \u00a330 million available for collaborative research and development projects for new battery technologies, and up to a further \u00a310 million for feasibility studies<\/li>\n<li>the competitions open on 25 July 2017, and the deadline for applications is at midday on 14 September 2017<\/li>\n<li>we expect research and development projects to range in size from \u00a31 million to \u00a315 million and last up to 3 years<\/li>\n<li>we expect feasibility studies to range in size from \u00a3150,000 to \u00a31 million and last between 3 and 12 months<\/li>\n<li>businesses could attract up to 70% of their project costs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/apply-for-innovation-funding.service.gov.uk\/competition\/37\/overview\">Apply for the Faraday Challenge research and development competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/apply-for-innovation-funding.service.gov.uk\/competition\/35\/overview\">Apply for the Faraday Challenge feasibility studies competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"national-battery-manufacturing-development-facility\">National battery manufacturing development facility<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>the APC will fund one project for a new state-of-the-art battery manufacturing development facility<\/li>\n<li>projects are anticipated to be in excess of \u00a340 million<\/li>\n<li>the competition opens on 25 July, and the registration deadline is midday on 13 September 2017<\/li>\n<li>work must be carried out in the UK<\/li>\n<li>project build is expected to last a maximum of 24 months, with the construction complete and the facility operational by early 2020<\/li>\n<li>you may be eligible for up to 100% of your project costs if you or the delivery organisation is a non-profit research organisation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/apply-for-innovation-funding.service.gov.uk\/competition\/52\/overview\">Apply for the Faraday Challenge facility competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"research-into-batteries\">Research into batteries<\/h3>\n<p>Separate to these competitions, the Faraday Challenge will support activities across research, innovation and scale up. This includes a call by the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epsrc.ac.uk\/\">Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council<\/a> (EPSRC) to establish a virtual research institute, plus associated research into battery development.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epsrc.ac.uk\/newsevents\/news\/batteriesresearch\/\">Find out more about EPSRC\u2019s calls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"autonomous-vehicles-competitions\">Autonomous vehicles competitions<\/h2>\n<p>The Business Secretary also announced 2 competitions to encourage projects that show how connected and autonomous vehicles can work in the real world.
