{"id":83266,"date":"2017-08-07T12:55:16","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T12:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=b96db20a277b4bc923eb7b8325bb5e64"},"modified":"2017-08-07T12:55:16","modified_gmt":"2017-08-07T12:55:16","slug":"government-response-dit-is-attracting-top-talent-to-trade-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=83266","title":{"rendered":"Government response: DIT is attracting top talent to trade team"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>A \u2018Comment is Free\u2019 article on the Guardian website on Friday 4 August incorrectly reported that a Canadian trade negotiator was the \u201cfirst candidate\u201d for the Department for International Trade\u2019s (<abbr title=\"Department for International Trade\">DIT<\/abbr>) Chief Trade Negotiation Adviser, claiming that he turned down the job after a pay dispute.<\/p>\n<p>It also incorrectly asserts that we have no trade lawyers.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Department for International Trade\">DIT<\/abbr> was established by the Prime Minister in July 2016 to support UK businesses to break into overseas markets, promote the UK as a place to do business and trade with, and negotiate and implement our new global trading arrangements as we leave the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>To do this we need to build a new major capability which was not previously required in the UK government. We have made huge progress in doing so over the past year, and shall continue to do so over coming years.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the facts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/dit-appoints-crawford-falconer-as-new-chief-trade-negotiation-adviser\">we appointed globally respected trade negotiator Crawford Falconer<\/a>, to the <abbr title=\"Department for International Trade\">DIT<\/abbr> Chief Trade Negotiation Adviser role<\/li>\n<li>Crawford was the top candidate and our first choice: to suggest otherwise is completely false<\/li>\n<li>with 25 years of public service in international trade and foreign affairs as New Zealand (<abbr title=\"New Zealand\">NZ<\/abbr>) Deputy Secretary and Vice Minister for International Trade and Foreign Affairs, and former <abbr title=\"New Zealand\">NZ<\/abbr> Ambassador to the <abbr title=\"World Trade Organization\">WTO<\/abbr>, he will lead the new profession within the UK Civil Service<\/li>\n<li>since its formation in July 2016, <abbr title=\"Department for International Trade\">DIT<\/abbr>\u2019s headcount has increased to a global workforce of over 3,200 people<\/li>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"Department for International Trade\">DIT<\/abbr> continues to build on our trade capability \u2013 the trade policy team has grown significantly from 45 in June 2016 to over 300 today<\/li>\n<li>the trade policy team now includes policy and country specialists, as well as expert economic analysts and lawyers<\/li>\n<li>as with many other government departments, <abbr title=\"Department for International Trade\">DIT<\/abbr> has its own team of dedicated lawyers<\/li>\n<li>currently there are over 20 lawyers working specifically on trade issues and are based at <abbr title=\"Department for International Trade\">DIT<\/abbr> &#8211; this will grow as we enter further talks and negotiations<\/li>\n<li>there is significant demand for roles at all levels within <abbr title=\"Department for International Trade\">DIT<\/abbr> &#8211; in one round of recruitment for 96 roles, the department received 1,608 applications<\/li>\n<li>our Permanent Secretary and Chief Trade Negotiation Adviser roles received 111 and 58 applications respectively<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department for International Trade is building a world-class team to develop our future global trading arrangements after Brexit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83266"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=83266"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83266\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=83266"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=83266"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=83266"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
