Some newly-qualified drivers take lessons through the voluntary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pass-plus\">Pass Plus<\/a> scheme.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-the-change-will-work\">How the change will work<\/h2>\n<p>The change will apply to England, Scotland and Wales.<\/p>\n<p>Learner drivers will need to be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>accompanied by an approved driving instructor<\/li>\n<li>driving a car fitted with dual controls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Any motorways lessons will be voluntary. It will be up to the driving instructor to decide when the learner driver is competent enough to have a motorway lesson.<\/p>\n<p>Trainee driving instructors won\u2019t be allowed to take learner drivers on the motorway.<\/p>\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n<p>Motorway driving will be not be included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/driving-test-changes-4-december-2017\">driving test changes<\/a> coming into force on 4 December 2017.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The change will only apply to learner drivers of cars &#8211; learner motorcyclists won\u2019t be allowed to have motorway lessons.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-the-change-will-happen\">When the change will happen<\/h2>\n<p>The exact date in 2018 will be confirmed nearer the time.<\/p>\n<p>The change will be well-publicised so driving instructors and learner drivers are prepared for the change, and other road users know what to expect. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/the-highway-code\/motorways-253-to-273\">The Highway Code rules on motorways<\/a> will also be updated.<\/p>\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Help\" class=\"application-notice help-notice\">\n<p>Until the law is changed, it\u2019s still illegal for a learner driver to drive on a motorway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"driving-instructor-vehicles-and-training\">Driving instructor vehicles and training<\/h2>\n<p>Driving instructors will be allowed to decide whether or not to keep their driving school roof-top box on during motorway lessons, based on the manufacturer\u2019s instructions.<\/p>\n<p>However, the car will still need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/driving-lessons-learning-to-drive\/using-l-and-p-plates\">display L plates on the front and rear<\/a> if the rooftop box is removed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Driving school car\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/66147\/driving-school-car.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>It will be up to the instructor whether or not they keep their driving school roof-top box on &#8211;
