{"id":83394,"date":"2017-08-12T22:32:00","date_gmt":"2017-08-12T22:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=4a2d147922be971e7b90966b94418481"},"modified":"2018-03-01T11:54:33","modified_gmt":"2018-03-01T11:54:33","slug":"news-story-learner-drivers-will-be-allowed-on-motorways-from-2018-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=83394","title":{"rendered":"News story: Learner drivers on motorways from 4 June 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated:<\/em> Added the date (Monday 4 June 2018) that the law will change, advice about driving near learner drivers on the motorway, and added a Welsh translation of the news story.<\/p>\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>From Monday 4 June 2018, learner drivers will be able to take driving lessons on motorways in England, Scotland and Wales.<\/p>\n<p>This will help to make sure more drivers know how to use motorways safely.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, you can only have motorway lessons after you\u2019ve passed your driving test. Some newly-qualified drivers take lessons through the voluntary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pass-plus\">Pass Plus<\/a> scheme.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-the-change-will-work\">How the change will work<\/h2>\n<p>Learner drivers will need to be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>accompanied by an approved driving instructor<\/li>\n<li>driving a car fitted with dual controls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Any motorways lessons will be voluntary. It will be up to the driving instructor to decide when the learner driver is competent enough for them.<\/p>\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Help\" class=\"application-notice help-notice\">\n<p>Until the law changes, it\u2019s still illegal for a learner driver to drive on a motorway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The change only applies to learner drivers of cars. Learner motorcyclists won\u2019t be allowed on motorways.<\/p>\n<p>Trainee driving instructors won\u2019t be allowed to take learner drivers on the motorway.<\/p>\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n<p>Motorway driving isn\u2019t being introduced to the driving test as part of this change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"making-sure-road-users-are-ready-for-the-change\">Making sure road users are ready for the change<\/h2>\n<p>The change is being well-publicised so that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>driving instructors and learner drivers are prepared<\/li>\n<li>other road users know what to expect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/the-highway-code\/motorways-253-to-273\">The Highway Code rules on motorways<\/a> will be updated.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"driving-near-learner-drivers-on-the-motorway\">Driving near learner drivers on the motorway<\/h2>\n<p>As with any vehicle on the motorway, keep a safe distance from a learner driver in front of you. Increase the gap on wet or icy roads, or in fog.<\/p>\n<p>You should always be patient with learner drivers. They may not be so skilful at anticipating and responding to events.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"driving-instructor-vehicles-and-training\">Driving instructor vehicles and training<\/h2>\n<p>Driving instructors can decide if they want to use a driving school rooftop box during motorway lessons, based on its instructions.<\/p>\n<p>The car will need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/driving-lessons-learning-to-drive\/using-l-and-p-plates\">display L plates<\/a> on the front and rear if the rooftop box is removed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/66147\/driving-school-car.jpg\" alt=\"Driving school car\"><\/div><figcaption>It will be up to the instructor whether or not they keep their driving school rooftop box on the car.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"guidance-for-driving-instructors\">Guidance for driving instructors<\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.safedrivingforlife.info\/shop\/car\/practical\">Learning materials<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/car-and-small-van-driving-syllabus\">syllabus for learning to drive a car<\/a> are being updated to include motorway lessons.<\/p>\n<p>The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency won\u2019t give driving instructors extra training on providing motorway lessons.<\/p>\n<p>The driving instructor\u2019s National Associations Strategic Partnership has produced best practice guidance to help instructors.<\/p>\n<div class=\"form-download\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/n-a-s-p.co.uk\/download\/i\/mark_dl\/u\/4013106541\/4633805807\/Motorway%20Tuition%20Guidelines%20revised%2018-Jan-2017.pdf\">Download \u2018Motorway tuition guidelines\u2019 (PDF. 116KB)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"preparing-drivers-for-a-lifetime-of-safe-driving\">Preparing drivers for a lifetime of safe driving<\/h2>\n<p>The changes are being made to allow learner drivers to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>get broader driving experience before taking their driving test<\/li>\n<li>get training on how to join and leave the motorway, overtake and use lanes correctly<\/li>\n<li>practise driving at higher speeds<\/li>\n<li>understand motorway specific traffic signs<\/li>\n<li>understand what to do if a vehicle breaks down on a motorway<\/li>\n<li>improve their confidence to drive on the motorway unsupervised after passing their driving test<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Learner drivers can take motorway driving lessons with an approved driving instructor from 4 June 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83394"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=83394"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83394\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":89505,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83394\/revisions\/89505"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=83394"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=83394"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=83394"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
