{"id":83887,"date":"2017-09-01T12:37:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-01T12:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=b6c6e5272cdca32d61af5e0735dbb21d"},"modified":"2017-09-01T12:37:00","modified_gmt":"2017-09-01T12:37:00","slug":"news-story-investigatory-powers-commissioner-establishes-oversight-regime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=83887","title":{"rendered":"News story: Investigatory Powers Commissioner establishes oversight regime"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Lord Justice Fulford has today started a new role in overseeing the police, law enforcement and intelligence agencies\u2019 use of investigatory powers.<\/p>\n<p>This marks a major milestone in establishing the powerful oversight regime set out in the Investigatory Powers Act, which was given Royal Assent last year.<\/p>\n<p>The role replaces the oversight roles previously undertaken by the Chief Surveillance, Interception of Communications, and Intelligence Services Commissioners, by establishing inspection and oversight functions in a single independent body.<\/p>\n<p>The Home Secretary Amber Rudd said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Investigatory Powers Act offers a world-leading oversight regime to ensure the powers the security and intelligence agencies and law enforcement use to investigate crimes and protect the public are used responsibly and proportionately.<\/p>\n<p>In commencing his oversight responsibility, Lord Justice Fulford is playing a vital role in providing the enhanced safeguards we set out in the act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I would also like to thank the outgoing commissioners Lord Judge, Sir Stanley Burnton and Sir John Goldring for their hard work and dedication to their respective roles.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>From today, the Investigatory Powers Commissioner\u2019s Office (IPCO) takes over the inspection and oversight functions carried out by the previous commissioners\u2019 offices, and takes on responsibility for the pre-approval of certain police activities authorised under the Police Act 1997.<\/p>\n<p>The commissioner\u2019s further powers including the judicial \u2018double-lock\u2019, which will require warrants issued by the Secretary of State to also be approved by a Judicial Commissioner will be introduced in due course.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Judge, formerly the Chief Surveillance Commissioner, and Sir Stanley Burnton, formerly the Interception of Communications Commissioner, are standing down.<\/p>\n<p>Sir John Goldring, formerly the Intelligence Services Commissioner, will take on a new role as Deputy Investigatory Powers Commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>More information is available on the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/ipco.org.uk\/\">Investigatory Powers Commissioner\u2019s<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From today (1 September 2017), Lord Justice Fulford has commenced his new role overseeing the use of investigatory powers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83887"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=83887"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83887\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":83946,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83887\/revisions\/83946"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=83887"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=83887"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=83887"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
