{"id":84270,"date":"2017-09-12T16:09:26","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T16:09:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=f8b5ea9713613d1f49c07f9bd0b1c796"},"modified":"2017-09-12T16:09:26","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T16:09:26","slug":"news-story-health-secretary-challenges-nhs-to-deliver-digital-services-nationwide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=84270","title":{"rendered":"News story: Health Secretary challenges NHS to deliver digital services nationwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Every patient in England should be able access their medical records and book an appointment with a GP via an app by the end of 2018, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Health and Care Innovation Expo in Manchester on 12 September, he referred to the next 10 years as \u2018the decade of patient power\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 2018 &#8211; the 70th birthday year of the NHS &#8211; the Health Secretary said he expects every patient in England to be able to do the following online through an app:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>access NHS 111<\/li>\n<li>access their healthcare record<\/li>\n<li>book a GP appointment<\/li>\n<li>order repeat prescriptions<\/li>\n<li>express their organ donation preferences<\/li>\n<li>express their data sharing preferences<\/li>\n<li>access support for managing a long term condition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pilot schemes are already underway, with ongoing evaluation before a potential national roll-out.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Hunt said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If the NHS is going to be the safest, highest quality healthcare system in the world we need to do technology better. So today I am setting 7 challenges which, if we achieve them, will make the NHS a world-beater in the care of people with long term conditions.<\/p>\n<p>People should be able to access their own medical records 24\/7, show their full medical history to anyone they choose and book basic services like GP appointments or repeat prescriptions online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I do not underestimate the challenge of getting there &#8211; but if we do it will be the best possible 70th birthday present from the NHS to its patients.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Online trials of support for long-term conditions have already been successful, with apps such as MyCOPD helping patients manage their conditions with less reliance on GP and hospital appointments.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure independent \u2018digital doctors\u2019 are operating at the same high standard as the rest of the NHS, the Department of Health has launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/new-expanding-performance-assessments-of-providers-regulated-by-cqc\">consultation about expanding the number of providers<\/a> included in the Care Quality Commission\u2019s ratings system.<\/p>\n<p>Imelda Redmond, National Director of Healthwatch England said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The vision set out by the Secretary of State directly addresses what patients and the broader public have told Healthwatch they want from a modern NHS, and is a huge step forward in ensuring all of us get the sort of integrated service we have come to expect in many other areas of life.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In his address to delegates the Health Secretary also announced:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the launch of MyNHS open data challenge &#8211; a \u00a3100,000 fund to reward most creative apps and digital tools to improve services<\/li>\n<li>an update on the acute and mental health global digital exemplars \u2013 organisations which deliver care through world-class use of digital technology and information flows<\/li>\n<li>which trusts will form part of a further wave of exemplars \u2013 the \u2018Fast Followers\u2019 &#8211; which will receive \u00a3160 million funding<\/li>\n<li>\u00a321 million of new matched funding for up to 7 mental health \u201cFast Followers\u201d &#8211; creating fresh investment of up to \u00a342 million<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jeremy Hunt addresses Health and Care Innovation Expo in Manchester on 12 September.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/84270"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=84270"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/84270\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=84270"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=84270"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=84270"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
