{"id":84271,"date":"2017-09-12T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=8ec2ac47f925d40f58526788f05ace0a"},"modified":"2017-09-12T15:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T15:00:00","slug":"news-story-better-co-ordination-to-stop-illegal-waste-carriers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=84271","title":{"rendered":"News story: Better co-ordination to stop illegal waste carriers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Environment Agency and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (<abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr>) have agreed on steps to stop illegal waste carriers and improve road safety in England.<\/p>\n<p>Sir James Bevan, Environment Agency Chief Executive, and Gareth Llewellyn, <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> Chief Executive, signed an agreement today (12 September 2017) in London.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-being-a-waste-carrier-works\">How being a waste carrier works<\/h2>\n<p>Companies must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/waste-carrier-or-broker-registration\">register as a waste carrier<\/a> if they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>transport waste<\/li>\n<li>buy, sell or dispose of waste<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, some carriers operate illegally without the necessary licence, and don\u2019t dispose of waste legally.<\/p>\n<p>Companies who use a waste carrier must <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/environment.data.gov.uk\/public-register\/view\/search-waste-carriers-brokers\">check they\u2019re registered to dispose of waste<\/a>, and not allow the waste carrier to dispose of their waste illegally.<\/p>\n<p>Every year waste crime costs taxpayers and businesses \u00a31 billion. The Environment Agency spent almost \u00a315 million stopping illegal waste activity between April 2015 and March 2016.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-the-agreement-will-do\">What the agreement will do<\/h2>\n<p>The Environment Agency and <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> will share intelligence and carry out joint operations in England to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stop waste being illegally transported<\/li>\n<li>target unsafe drivers and vehicles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The agreement will see:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> staff working within Environment Agency teams, making sure enforcement action is coordinated and effective<\/li>\n<li>information and intelligence shared between the 2 agencies, increasing the effectiveness of roadside enforcement activity on waste industry vehicles<\/li>\n<li>enforcement teams provided with up-to date and relevant intelligence about waste industry operators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/67129\/dvsa-traffic-examiner-vehicle.jpg\" alt=\"DVSA traffic examiner inspects a waste carrier\"><\/div><figcaption>A <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> traffic examiner inspects a waste carrier<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This will all help to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>identify high-risk or illegal goods vehicle operators who are involved in the transport of waste<\/li>\n<li>reduce the number of seriously and serially non-compliant waste industry vehicles on England\u2019s roads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"report-unsafe-operators\">Report unsafe operators<\/h3>\n<p>You can report any information you have about unsafe vehicle operators to <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"contact \" id=\"contact_3361\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h3>\n<abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> intelligence team<\/h3>\n<div class=\"vcard contact-inner\">\n<div class=\"email-url-number\">\n<p class=\"email\">\n              <span class=\"type\">Email<\/span><br \/>\n              <a class=\"email\" href=\"mailto:intelligenceunit@dvsa.gov.uk\">intelligenceunit@dvsa.gov.uk<\/a>\n            <\/p>\n<p class=\"tel\">\n              <span class=\"type\">Telephone<\/span><br \/>\n              0300 123 9000\n            <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"comments\">Report vehicle operators or lorry, bus and coach drivers breaking safety rules and laws.<\/p>\n<p>Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 6pm.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"building-on-years-of-joint-work\">Building on years of joint work<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/67130\/ea-dvsa-joint-operation-london.jpg\" alt=\"Staff from the Environment Agency and DVSA in London\"><\/div><figcaption>Sir James Bevan and Gareth Llewellyn (right) talk to Environment Agency and <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> staff at a joint operation in London<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For a number of years, the Environment Agency and <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> have worked together to stop waste crime, making sure companies are operating legally and vehicle safety is improved.<\/p>\n<p>Gareth Llewellyn said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> priority is to protect you from unsafe drivers and vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>I am delighted that we will be working with the Environment Agency to tackle those who illegally transport waste. By combining our enforcement powers and intelligence we\u2019ll be able to target those who break the rules more effectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\"><abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> traffic examiners will issue fines to those waste carriers we find to be operating in an unsafe manner.
