{"id":85052,"date":"2017-10-05T08:30:28","date_gmt":"2017-10-05T08:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=6ef020a485942ebc71bed09e3b3c0615"},"modified":"2017-10-05T08:30:28","modified_gmt":"2017-10-05T08:30:28","slug":"news-story-improved-drug-safety-and-stroke-detection-firms-get-15-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=85052","title":{"rendered":"News story: Improved drug safety and stroke detection: firms get \u00a315 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>New approaches and treatments for Parkinson\u2019s disease, stroke and epilepsy and a device to improve detection of plant disease are some of the projects that will share \u00a315 million from Innovate UK.<\/p>\n<p>Among the ideas are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sensor-enabled emotion monitoring eyewear, which will help to identify a subset of patients that might merit further investigation for Parkinson\u2019s disease, enable remote monitoring and personalise treatment. The disease affects 30 million people worldwide, with 10,000 new cases diagnosed every year in the UK. The project team is <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/emteq.net\/\">Emteq<\/a> and <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.port.ac.uk\/\">University of Portsmouth<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>an in-field, early detection device for plant disease in soil and water that alerts farmers to the risk of infection before disease can spread and destroy an entire field. It should increase crop yields, while also allowing for evidence-based spraying to reduce the amount of pesticides in the food chain. <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fungialert.com\/\">FungiAlert<\/a> is the lead<\/li>\n<li>\u2018liver on a chip\u2019, which is an in-vitro testing platform that will reliably replicate the liver response to toxins in genomically-diverse stem cells. It should mean \u2018fast failing\u2019 for drug candidates that are likely to harm the liver, improve drug safety and increase the launch rate of new drugs by 25%. <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/stemnovate.co.uk\/\">Stemnovate<\/a> and <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.anbsensors.com\/\">ANB Sensors<\/a> are the project team<\/li>\n<li>a portable, low-cost system that detects the occurrence and evolution of stroke, using harmless, low-power microwaves to quickly obtain images for clinical analysis. Every year, 5 million people die and another 5 million are permanently disabled due to stroke incidents. The project team is <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mediwise.co.uk\/\">Medical Wireless Sensing<\/a> and <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/index.aspx\">King\u2019s College London<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>a precision medicine tool, using advanced algorithms to interrogate the electrical activity of the brain and reveal susceptibility to epilepsy \u2013 a serious neurological condition that affects almost 1% of the population. It is responsible for some 1,000 deaths annually in the UK.
