{"id":85795,"date":"2017-10-27T08:30:52","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T08:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=55e0d2dfd2e213486a132d49dac009f9"},"modified":"2017-10-27T08:30:52","modified_gmt":"2017-10-27T08:30:52","slug":"press-release-enforcement-undertaking-agreed-with-anglian-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=85795","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Enforcement Undertaking agreed with Anglian Water"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>An enforcement undertaking (EU) has been agreed with Anglian Water after the company polluted Houghton Brook, Cambridgeshire with sewage.<\/p>\n<p>Around 150 fish died when sewage from Ilex Road Pumping Station in St Ives was pumped into the water system for 10 hours via the emergency overflow.<\/p>\n<p>The overflow was mainly caused by excessive levels of un-flushable material\/rag blocking the pump, which was a known issue at the works. Contributing factors included a second pump being out of service during the incident and the failure of an alarm.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the pollution the water company tankered the watercourse to prevent pollution travelling further downstream and 2 days later the stream was running clear.<\/p>\n<p>Anglian Water has since replaced equipment at the pumping station including a pump that can better cope with high levels of rag.<\/p>\n<p>The Environment Agency accepted the offer by the water company to put right any damage caused by the pollution and to donate to an environmental charity.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"environment-to-benefit\">Environment to benefit<\/h3>\n<p>As part of the EU, Anglian Water has donated \u00a3100,000 to the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire to benefit the local environment and also paid the Environment Agency\u2019s costs.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Hay, Environment Agency officer, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Enforcement undertakings allow those who commit offences to restore the environment and to take steps to prevent a recurrence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">When appropriate, they allow a quicker resolution than a prosecution and help offenders who are prepared to take responsibility for their actions to put things right voluntarily working with their local communities\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Formal sample results taken after the incident in September 2014 showed that sewage had polluted approximately 635m of the stream.<\/p>\n<p>The EU was offered in relation to an offence of pollution under section 4 of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975.<\/p>\n<p>It was accepted in March 2017 and the undertaking was completed on 30 May 2017.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a3100,000 donated to Wildlife Trust to benefit local environment<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/85795"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=85795"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/85795\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=85795"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=85795"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=85795"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
