{"id":86394,"date":"2017-11-15T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-15T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=1cf5be1c55a5a19a5114c0aaf874db8d"},"modified":"2017-11-23T15:39:09","modified_gmt":"2017-11-23T15:39:09","slug":"news-story-driving-examiner-strike-december-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=86394","title":{"rendered":"News story: Driving examiner strike: December 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated:<\/em> Updated the statement from Gareth Llewellyn, DVSA Chief Executive.<\/p>\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Some driving examiners who are members of the Public and Commercial Service (<abbr title=\"Public and Commercial Service\">PCS<\/abbr>) union are planning to take strike action on Monday 4 December and Tuesday 5 December 2017.<\/p>\n<p>You can either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>change your test appointment to a later date<\/li>\n<li>turn up for your test as planned, but your examiner might be unavailable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Starting from Thursday 23 November 2017, some driving tests could be affected by driving examiners taking action short of a strike, for example, not working overtime. The <abbr title=\"Public and Commercial Service\">PCS<\/abbr> union hasn\u2019t given an end date for this action.<\/p>\n<p>Not all driving examiners are union members, and even if they are, they might choose not to take industrial action.<\/p>\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/driving-test-changes-4-december-2017\">The way the car driving test works is changing<\/a> on Monday 4 December 2017. These changes will still go ahead as planned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"if-your-driving-test-is-cancelled\">If your driving test is cancelled<\/h2>\n<p>You won\u2019t have to contact the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (<abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr>) to rebook your appointment if you can\u2019t take your test because of strike action.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> will contact you with a new test appointment within 5 to 10 working days.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"out-of-pocket-expenses\">Out of pocket expenses<\/h3>\n<p>You can claim out of pocket expenses if your test is cancelled, but you must have turned up for your test to be able to do this. If you don\u2019t turn up, you\u2019ll have to rebook your own test and won\u2019t be able to claim expenses.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/application-for-refunding-out-of-pocket-expenses\">Find out how to claim out-of-pocket expenses<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"theory-tests\">\u00a0Theory tests<\/h3>\n<p>Theory tests aren\u2019t affected by the strike action and will be taking place as planned.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-the-strike-is-about\">\u00a0What the strike is about<\/h2>\n<p>The strike action is about a new standard employment contract that <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> staff signed up to in 2014. In return for changes to their terms and conditions, they received a buy-out and a 3-year pay deal.<\/p>\n<p>This contract was negotiated with the unions and agreed by staff in a ballot. Since then, <abbr title=\"Public and Commercial Service\">PCS<\/abbr> has opposed some aspects of the contract<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Public and Commercial Service\">PCS<\/abbr> is now trying to link the dispute with health and safety risks of changes to the driving test. The new driving test has been designed to make sure drivers are better prepared for a lifetime of safe driving.<\/p>\n<p>The changes have been developed and trialled extensively with input from <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> staff, learner drivers, their instructors and other road safety professionals.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> carried out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/new-driving-test-trial#risk-assessments\">risk assessments<\/a> and commissioned the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (<abbr title=\"Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents\">RoSPA<\/abbr>) to carry out an independent assessment.
