{"id":86612,"date":"2017-11-23T17:12:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-23T17:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=03ce4a39e0ecb1e8361d1b71e6d2dcfe"},"modified":"2017-11-23T17:12:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-23T17:12:00","slug":"news-story-mystery-of-2-unknown-british-soldiers-finally-solved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=86612","title":{"rendered":"News story: Mystery of 2 unknown British soldiers finally solved"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The families of Guardsmen Joseph Goulden and Raymond Frederick Rose, who both served with the Coldstream Guards before being killed during World War 2, can finally take comfort in knowing the location of their loved ones\u2019 final resting place.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of an investigation undertaken by the <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr>\u2019s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (<abbr title=\"Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre\">JCCC<\/abbr>), Guardsman Goulden from Pontefract, Yorkshire and Guardsman Rose from Gloucester were honoured during a moving rededication service earlier today (Thursday 23 November 2017).<\/p>\n<p>The service, organised by the <abbr title=\"Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre\">JCCC<\/abbr>, part of Defence Business Services, was conducted by The Reverend Jacob Caldwell CF, Chaplain 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (<abbr title=\"Commonwealth War Graves Commission\">CWGC<\/abbr>) Salerno War Cemetery, Italy.<\/p>\n<p>Following the discoveries made by 2 Italian military historical groups, subsequent research by the <abbr title=\"Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre\">JCCC<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"Deoxyribonucleic Acid\">DNA<\/abbr> testing confirming their identities, <abbr title=\"Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre\">JCCC<\/abbr> were able to trace the 2 associated families so they could be invited to attend today\u2019s service alongside current members of the Coldstream Guards.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/69400\/Photo_4_-_Crown_Copyright__2_.jpg\" alt=\"2nd cousin Susan Henry receives a presentation of a regimental cap and belt along with the Union Flag on behalf of the Goulden family, Crown Copyright, All rights reserved\"><\/div><figcaption>2nd cousin Susan Henry receives a presentation of a regimental cap and belt along with the Union Flag on behalf of the Goulden family, Crown Copyright, All rights reserved<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sue Raftree, <abbr title=\"Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre\">JCCC<\/abbr> said:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">These 2 brave soldiers fought for their country to make our lives better. Originally buried as unknowns they now have their own headstones whilst their families finally have closure. At 11.40 am the attack began and regrettably, there were huge casualties including Guardsmen Goulden and Rose.<\/p>\n<p>Guardsman Joseph Goulden was 31 years old when he was killed whilst Guardsman Raymond Rose was just 19.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/69399\/Photo_3_-_Crown_Copyright__2_.jpg\" alt=\"The Goulden family accompanied by Reverend Jacob Caldwell, members of the Coldstream Guards, British Exchange Officer Colonel David Rook and Italian officials. Crown Copyright, All rights reserved<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Statement from the Goulden family:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We were deeply humbled to discover that we had a relative who fought and died in Salerno Italy during World War 2.  Joseph Goulden enlisted in the Coldstream Guards and successfully fought in Africa and Egypt before he was sent to Italy where he bravely fought and died taking Hill 270. To risk his life for the good of his fellow man; the ultimate sacrifice.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Reverend Jacob Caldwell CF said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">What an honour it is to formally recognise the sacrifice of Guardsman Rose and Guardsman Goulden here in the presence of their families. At the Battle of Salerno the Coldstream Guards demonstrated a remarkable resolve in the face of some profoundly challenging circumstances.
