The qualifying process involves passing 3 tests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 1 &#8211; a theory test<\/li>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 2 &#8211; a driving ability test<\/li>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 3 &#8211; an instructional ability test<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From 23 December 2017, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (<abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr>) will change the way that the <abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 2 test and the <abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 3 test work.<\/p>\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n<p>The way the <abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 1 test works won\u2019t be changing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"better-assessment-of-driving-ability\">Better assessment of driving ability<\/h2>\n<p>The way that the <abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 2 test works will change to reflect the changes being made to the car driving test on 4 December 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Trainee instructors will have to demonstrate the skills they\u2019ll be teaching to learner drivers. The changes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>driving independently for around 20 minutes (an increase from the current 10 minutes) while following directions from a sat nav or a series of traffic signs<\/li>\n<li>doing 2 of 4 possible reversing manoeuvres:\n<ul>\n<li>parallel park at the side of the road<\/li>\n<li>reverse into a parking bay and drive out<\/li>\n<li>drive into a parking bay and reverse out<\/li>\n<li>pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for around 2 car lengths, and rejoin the traffic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>answering 2 vehicle safety questions while driving &#8211; for example, showing the examiner how they\u2019d use the car\u2019s cruise control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>Find out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/adi-part-2-test\/changes-december-2017\">how the <abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 2 test will work<\/a> from 23 December 2017.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"more-realistic-assessment-of-teaching-ability\">More realistic assessment of teaching ability<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 3 test will change to become a much more realistic assessment of a trainee instructor\u2019s ability to teach a pupil.<\/p>\n<p>In the current <abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 3 test, trainee instructors provide training to a driving examiner role-playing the part of a pupil.<\/p>\n<p>When the test changes, they\u2019ll give a driving lesson to a real pupil while an examiner assesses their ability to tailor the training to that pupil\u2019s learning goals and needs.<\/p>\n<p>The examiner will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>look for evidence that the trainee instructor meets the national standard for driver and rider training<\/li>\n<li>mark 17 areas of competence in 3 categories &#8211; lesson planning, risk management and teaching and learning skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The change will bring the <abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 3 test in line with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/adi-standards-check\"><abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> standards check<\/a>, which every <abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> has to take at least once every 4 years to stay qualified.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>Find out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/adi-part-3-test\/changes-december-2017\">how the <abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> part 3 test will work<\/a> from 23 December 2017.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"helping-you-through-a-lifetime-of-safe-driving\">Helping you through a lifetime of safe driving<\/h2>\n<p>The improvements to the qualifying tests are part of <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr>\u2019s strategy to help everyone stay safe on Great Britain\u2019s roads.<\/p>\n<p>Jacqui Turland, <abbr title=\"approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> Registrar, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr>\u2019s priority is to help you through a lifetime of safe driving.<\/p>\n<p>To make sure that new drivers get the best possible training, we\u2019re improving how we assess that ADIs have the knowledge, modern driving skills and understanding they need to provide successful tuition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">ADIs play a vital role in improving road safety. These changes mean they\u2019ll be better prepared for the realities of teaching a wide range of pupils to become safe and responsible drivers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Carly Brookfield, Chair of the National Associations Strategic Partnership of driving instructors, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We welcome the implementation of the new part 2 and part 3.
