{"id":87606,"date":"2017-12-23T00:15:05","date_gmt":"2017-12-23T00:15:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=47cee138dfe6ae4efa9e5891b189e8fd"},"modified":"2017-12-23T00:15:05","modified_gmt":"2017-12-23T00:15:05","slug":"news-story-major-road-network-investment-to-boost-motorists-journeys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=87606","title":{"rendered":"News story: Major Road Network investment to boost motorists&#8217; journeys"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>\u2018Key \u2018A\u2019 roads across the country could benefit from up to \u00a3100 million each of funding as government releases <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/proposals-for-the-creation-of-a-major-road-network\">consultation on the Major Roads Network<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Major Road Network\">MRN<\/abbr>) today (23 December 2017).<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"Major Road Network\">MRN<\/abbr> consultation proposes that 5,000 miles of \u2018A\u2019 road &#8211; that\u2019s over 20 times the length of the UK\u2019s longest motorway &#8211; are brought into scope for new funding from the National Roads Fund for upgrades and improvements.<\/p>\n<p>Upgrade schemes which could be considered are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>bypasses<\/li>\n<li>missing links between existing routes<\/li>\n<li>road widening<\/li>\n<li>major junction improvements<\/li>\n<li>the use of technological and safety enhancements along stretches of the network<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under the proposals in the consultation, each successful bid will be eligible for up to \u00a3100 million of government funding under the proposals and will help cut congestion, unlock housing and boost economic growth.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CEbQewDjIdk\">A new <abbr title=\"Major Road Network\">MRN<\/abbr><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>For decades, these major local roads have been underfunded and not properly maintained.<\/p>\n<p>We are spending record amounts on improving our roads and we want more of our busiest roads to benefit from guaranteed investment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This will unlock no end of benefits for communities by improving motorists\u2019 journeys, taking traffic away from built up areas, as well as enabling new housing to be built and creating jobs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/proposals-for-the-creation-of-a-major-road-network\">consultation on the \u2018A\u2019 roads which will make up the <abbr title=\"Major Road Network\">MRN<\/abbr> and the level of funding per scheme<\/a> starts today and will last 12 weeks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.dft.gov.uk\/major-road-network-consultation\/\">See a map of what the <abbr title=\"Major Road Network\">MRN<\/abbr> may look like<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>It is planned that a review of the <abbr title=\"Major Road Network\">MRN<\/abbr> will mirror the planned investment in the strategic road network &#8211; motorways and large A roads managed by Highways England.
