{"id":87723,"date":"2018-01-04T12:43:12","date_gmt":"2018-01-04T12:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=4535e8e06ef7ab2afc1a95cf6381ad98"},"modified":"2018-01-04T12:43:12","modified_gmt":"2018-01-04T12:43:12","slug":"news-story-new-falklands-chief-justice-appointed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=87723","title":{"rendered":"News story: New Falklands Chief Justice appointed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>On instructions from the Secretary of State, His Excellency the Governor has formally appointed Mr James Lewis QC as the Honourable the Chief Justice of the Falkland Islands.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lewis was officially sworn in by the Governor at a ceremony held at Government House on Thursday 4 January.<\/p>\n<p>Governor of the Falkland Islands, Nigel Phillips CBE commented:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted to be able to welcome James as the new Chief Justice for the Falkland Islands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJames and his wife have a longstanding interest and connection with the Islands, a huge breadth of experience in the judiciary and working with other Overseas Territories.  I know James will receive a warm welcome from the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A specialist in both civil and criminal cases, Mr Lewis was called to the bar in 1987 after serving for a number of years with Her Majesty\u2019s Armed Forces. He was appointed a Queen\u2019s Counsel in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lewis commented:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very much looking forward to taking up the appointment of Chief Justice and getting to know the Falkland Islands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy interest in the Falkland Islands was first sparked whilst on standby for the Falklands war as a young second lieutenant in 1982. Subsequently my wife visited the Falkland Islands in 1983 as a journalist and guest of the 1st Battalion The Coldstream Guards. Indeed, at home we display a framed copy of the front page of the Penguin News published on the day victory was declared (presented to my wife by the then editor of the paper).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy interest in the region has been further inspired by my recent expedition to the Antarctic this year when I visited both Scott\u2019s and Shackleton\u2019s huts, islands in the Ross sea, and the New Zealand subantarctic islands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lewis and his wife, have another connection to the Islands: \u201cMy wife\u2019s former secondary school teacher, who became a family friend, was the late Geoff Moir DFC, who taught at Fox Bay West and was very involved with the Falkland Islands Association.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lewis takes over from Simon Bryan QC, the previous Chief Justice who has recently been appointed as a High Court Judge.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Phillips said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of the whole community I would like to thank Simon for his support over the last few years and wish him and his family well for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>James Lewis QC sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Falkland Islands<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/87723"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=87723"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/87723\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=87723"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=87723"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=87723"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
