{"id":88009,"date":"2018-01-15T14:30:15","date_gmt":"2018-01-15T14:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=14b5ad4ec8e9a3b2f4b59960a05395eb"},"modified":"2018-01-15T14:30:15","modified_gmt":"2018-01-15T14:30:15","slug":"news-story-designing-roads-for-driverless-vehicles-apply-for-contracts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=88009","title":{"rendered":"News story: Designing roads for driverless vehicles: apply for contracts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nic.org.uk\/\">National Infrastructure Commission<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/highways-england\">Highways England<\/a> have up to \u00a3200,000 to invest in projects that look at changes to roads and related infrastructure to maximise the benefits of driverless and connected vehicle technologies.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"change-in-how-we-use-roads\">Change in how we use roads<\/h2>\n<p>Self-driving cars could be on UK roads in the next decade.<\/p>\n<p>The way we use roads could change as a result. Vehicles could move in convoys, there may be no need for traffic lights, and lane directions could change depending on the time of day.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"practical-ideas-on-design-and-management\">Practical ideas on design and management<\/h2>\n<p>The competition is seeking practical ideas on designing and managing roads in 3 areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>road design and related infrastructure including line markings, signs, posts, gantries, crash barriers and lighting columns<\/li>\n<li>traffic management such as traffic signals and any other means of controlling traffic flow<\/li>\n<li>road rules and regulations including such things as speed limits and waiting or loading restrictions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Funding for the competition is under SBRI (Small Business Research Initiative).<\/p>\n<p>Up to \u00a3150,000 is available for feasibility studies in a first phase.
