It will support the development of safe, cost-effective, durable, lighter weight, high-performing and recyclable batteries in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>It forms part of government\u2019s Sector Deal with the automotive industry. This is a joint commitment to work together and invest in areas of UK strength, including connected and autonomous vehicles, battery technology and ultra-low and zero emission vehicles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/government-agrees-landmark-sector-deal-to-establish-uk-as-world-leader-in-future-of-mobility\">Read the announcement on the Automotive Sector Deal.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/topical-events\/the-uks-industrial-strategy\">Find out more about the Industrial Strategy.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"aim-is-to-make-uk-a-global-leader\">Aim is to make UK a global leader<\/h2>\n<p>Batteries for future electric vehicles are seen as a major opportunity for UK businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Projects in this competition must support the challenge\u2019s aim to make the UK a global leader in the design, development and manufacture of batteries.<\/p>\n<p>Areas that could attract funding include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cost reduction at the cell and pack level<\/li>\n<li>increasing energy and power density<\/li>\n<li>eliminating thermal runaway risks for enhanced safety<\/li>\n<li>lengthening cell and pack life<\/li>\n<li>broadening the temperature ranges that a pack efficiently operates at<\/li>\n<li>new models to better predict range and battery health<\/li>\n<li>improving recyclability<\/li>\n<li>innovation in cell, module and pack production<\/li>\n<li>integration of cells into modules, packs and vehicles<\/li>\n<li>battery management systems<\/li>\n<li>enabling fast charging<\/li>\n<li>projects that stimulate and broaden innovation in the manufacture, performance and supply of materials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/future-electric-vehicle-batteries-long-lasting-cleaner-better\">Read about some of the winning projects from the first round of Faraday Battery Challenge innovation funding.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"competition-information\">Competition information<\/h2>\n<p>There are 2 competitions. Up to \u00a323 million is available for collaborative research and development. A further \u00a32 million is available for feasibility studies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the competitions open on 22 January 2018, and the deadline is 28 March 2018<\/li>\n<li>briefing events will be held in London, Newcastle and Cardiff throughout January and February<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"research-and-development\">Research and development<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>projects must be led by a business or a research and technology organisation<\/li>\n<li>businesses must work with at least one SME. Research and technology organisations must work with at least 2 partners, including one SME<\/li>\n<li>we expect projects to range in size from \u00a3500,000 to \u00a315 million and to last up to 30 months<\/li>\n<li>businesses could attract up to 70% of their project costs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/apply-for-innovation-funding.service.gov.uk\/competition\/104\/overview\">Find out more about the competition for research and development funding and apply.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"feasibility-studies\">Feasibility studies<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>projects must be led by a business or a research and technology organisation<\/li>\n<li>businesses must work with at least one SME.
