{"id":88115,"date":"2018-01-18T00:15:01","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T00:15:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=7488771c2e839710e22b3a21743bf981"},"modified":"2018-01-18T00:15:01","modified_gmt":"2018-01-18T00:15:01","slug":"press-release-government-sets-out-minimum-wage-rights-for-seafarers-in-uk-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=88115","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Government sets out minimum wage rights for seafarers in UK water"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<ul>\n<li>seafarers in UK internal waters must be paid at least the minimum wage, government warns<\/li>\n<li>UK Border Force will hand out information in over 50 languages promoting seafarers\u2019 workers\u2019 rights<\/li>\n<li>new Business Minister affirms workers playing a \u2018vital\u2019 role in UK waters should be paid fairly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All seafarers working in UK waters must be paid at least minimum wage rates, the government warned in new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/seafarers-employment-rights-and-minimum-wage\">guidance<\/a> published today (18 January 2018).<\/p>\n<p>It comes after concerns about unfair competition, following reports that some ships registered abroad were underpaying their workers in UK waters, undercutting UK crews.<\/p>\n<p>UK Border Force patrols will be handing out information to seafarers and employers in more than 50 languages promoting minimum wage law.<\/p>\n<p>Employers failing to pay at least National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage can face fines of up to 200% of the underpayment, public naming and, for the worst offences, criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>Business Minister Andrew Griffiths said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Seafarers\u2019 work is vital to key UK industries such as fishing, oil and gas. We are determined to ensure they are paid fairly for the work they do, often in challenging conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Today we are making it crystal clear that if you work in UK waters you are entitled to at least the minimum wage and all employers \u2013 no matter where they\u2019re from \u2013 must pay it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Border Force\u2019s Modern Slavery Maritime lead Rob Meyer said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Border Force takes its role of tackling exploitation and protecting vulnerable people very seriously.
