{"id":88741,"date":"2018-02-06T18:05:16","date_gmt":"2018-02-06T18:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=f5305a9013e5da8c30e2623b0b670e48"},"modified":"2018-02-06T18:05:16","modified_gmt":"2018-02-06T18:05:16","slug":"news-story-director-appointed-for-faraday-battery-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=88741","title":{"rendered":"News story: Director appointed for Faraday Battery Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jaguarlandrover.com\/\">Jaguar Land Rover\u2019s<\/a> Director of Engineering Research, Tony Harper has been appointed as Director, Faraday Battery Challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Tony will join <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/\">UK Research and Innovation<\/a> in April 2018 to lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/industrial-strategy-challenge-fund-joint-research-and-innovation#faraday-battery-challenge:-clean-and-flexible-energy\">Faraday Battery Challenge<\/a>. This is government\u2019s \u00a3246 million investment to develop safe, cost-effective, durable, lighter weight, higher performing and recyclable batteries in the UK. It is part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.<\/p>\n<p>He will work across Innovate UK and the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epsrc.ac.uk\/\">Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council<\/a> (EPSRC), who will jointly deliver the challenge, and work closely with the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apcuk.co.uk\/\">Advanced Propulsion Centre<\/a> (APC).<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>Learn more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/industrial-strategy-challenge-fund-joint-research-and-innovation\">Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"leading-industry-experience\">Leading industry experience<\/h2>\n<p>Tony has been working as Director of Engineering Research at Jaguar Land Rover since 2006. He is a chartered engineer, a fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Academy of Engineering, and an honorary fellow of the University of Warwick.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, he is an elected member of the UK Automotive Council Technology Group and sits on a number of industry advisory councils.<\/p>\n<p>Tony said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This is a unique opportunity to maximise the advantage for the UK from the shift to the electrification of transport by creating a high-tech, high-value, high-skill industry in battery technology.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">It is also a very exciting time to be joining UK Research and Innovation as it sets out to become the best research and innovation agency in the world.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Innovate UK Chief Executive, Ruth McKernan, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Tony\u2019s long-standing experience and expertise in automotive research and development means he is the ideal candidate to lead the ground-breaking Faraday Battery Challenge.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">He will have an important role to play in ensuring the UK is a world leader in the development of automotive battery technologies.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Business Minister Richard Harrington added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>With 200,000 electric vehicles set to be on UK roads by the end of 2018, investment in car batteries is a massive opportunity for Britain and one that, through our flagship Industrial Strategy and the Automotive Sector Deal, the government is committed to seizing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">To realise our grand ambitions we need great leadership, which is why I am delighted that someone as talented and respected in the sector as Tony Harper will be spearheading our efforts to make Britain the \u2018go-to\u2019 destination for the development and deployment of this game-changing technology.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"work-so-far\">Work so far<\/h2>\n<p>The Faraday Battery Challenge has already made strong progress.<\/p>\n<p>This includes the multi-million pound Faraday Institution to speed up research, innovation and scale-up novel battery technologies, and a \u00a380 million investment through the APC for the UK\u2019s first automotive battery manufacturing development facility<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4nzxP2kWv9A&amp;t=1s\">Faraday Battery Challenge CWLEP Video<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/government-investment-into-faraday-scale-up-facility-to-make-uk-a-world-leader-in-battery-innovation\">Read the Ministerial announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Innovate UK has also invested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/future-electric-vehicle-batteries-long-lasting-cleaner-better\">\u00a340 million across 27 battery research and development projects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Independent institute <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/hssmi.org\/\">HSSMI<\/a> are one such project to get funding.
