{"id":88850,"date":"2018-02-08T11:19:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-08T11:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=97513439b2896bd297c7dddf0f5b6f6a"},"modified":"2018-02-13T09:00:02","modified_gmt":"2018-02-13T09:00:02","slug":"news-story-government-funding-boost-for-bus-industry-in-drive-to-improve-air-quality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=88850","title":{"rendered":"News story: Government funding boost for bus industry in drive to improve air quality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated:<\/em> First year funding figure for Southampton City Council corrected to \u00a31,177,835.<\/p>\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Funding will be awarded to 20 local authorities as part of the Clean Bus Technology Fund, which was launched in 2017 and is run by the Joint Air Quality Unit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/government-funding-for-cleaner-buses\">Speaking at the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> Bus Summit at London\u2019s <abbr title=\"Queen Elizabeth the Second\">QEII<\/abbr> Centre<\/a> on 8 February 2018, Transport Minister Nusrat Ghani set out how the money will enable older vehicles to meet minimum emissions standards, and contribute to better air quality.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Bus Summit, Transport Minister Nusrat Ghani said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Buses and coaches are hugely important to those who rely on them and to the communities in which these people live and work.<\/p>\n<p>Road transport is going to change dramatically over the next couple of decades \u2013 and we have to make sure that the bus industry is ready to benefit from those changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We have to move away from nose-to-tail car traffic at peak times, endless engine idling, stop-start travel and rising pollution and carbon emissions. Rather than contributing to the problem \u2013 buses and coaches very much form part of the solution.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The money will allow councils to retrofit vehicles with technology to reduce tailpipe emissions of nitrogen dioxide, as part of a drive to help ensure that more buses and coaches can contribute to improving air quality in <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> cities.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/71601\/bus-ng.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of Nusrat Ghani in front of the electric buses.\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Environment Minister Therese Coffey said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Poor air quality affects public health, the economy and the environment, which is why we are determined to do more.<\/p>\n<p>I am delighted to see so many high quality applications to the Clean Bus Technology Fund and, as a result, the government has decided to bring forward funding meaning that we will award nearly \u00a340 million to retrofit more than 2,700 buses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This is another way which the government is delivering on its commitment to improving the environment within a generation and leave it in a better state than we found it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Alongside this, the Department for Transport will use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/bus-services-act-2017-new-powers-and-opportunities\">Bus Services Act<\/a> as a way of encouraging councils and bus companies to look at measures to encourage the public to use buses.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, government invested \u00a330 million through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/low-emission-bus-scheme-2016-to-2017-successful-bidders\">Low Emission Bus Scheme<\/a>, which helped put over 300 new low emission buses on the roads, with a further \u00a311 million and 150 buses being announced in 2017.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"winners\">Winners<\/h2>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Clean Bus Technology Fund 2017 to 2019 winners<\/th>\n<th>Number of buses<\/th>\n<th>2017\/18 funding<\/th>\n<th>2018\/19 funding<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>1. Of this, \u00a340 million was put towards the Clean Bus Technology Fund, and \u00a360 million was dedicated to new low emission buses. From the \u00a360 million, \u00a311 million was used to fund the best of the bids which had initially narrowly missed out on funding from <abbr title=\"Low emission bus scheme\">LEBS<\/abbr>, supporting the purchase of a further 150 low emission buses. The remaining \u00a349 million will be used to fund the next round of the Low Emission Bus Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>By 15 September this year (2018), 5 local authorities are required to set out their final plans for bringing nitrogen dioxide concentrations within legal limits in the shortest possible time.
