{"id":89212,"date":"2018-02-21T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T09:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=ece2ef994629d5808325b7320156e4d9"},"modified":"2018-02-21T09:00:13","modified_gmt":"2018-02-21T09:00:13","slug":"news-story-using-the-power-of-data-science-to-answer-world-wide-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=89212","title":{"rendered":"News story: Using the power of data science to answer world-wide challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p><abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr> is working in partnership with Government Communications Headquarters<br \/>\n(<abbr title=\"Government Communications Headquarters\">GCHQ<\/abbr>) and the Alan Turing Institute \u2013 the national Institute for data science \u2013 on a number of defence challenges that exploit the power of data science.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this work, <abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr> took part in a Data Study Group, a regular series of events run by the Alan Turing Institute in which researchers work on real-world data science challenges over the space of a week. <abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr> contributed a project for the Data Study Group to explore whether machine learning could be used to identify code vulnerabilities. The aim was to develop potential practical solutions; such as improved detection of software vulnerabilities that might decrease software resiliency or be exploitable by potential hackers.<\/p>\n<p>Around seventy data science researchers took part in the Data Study Group, drawn from universities from around the UK and with specialisms ranging from machine learning, computer science and deep learning.<\/p>\n<p>Technical support for those participating was provided by <abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr> staff, contributing and actively supporting the study groups.<\/p>\n<p>Results are expected to be applied in real world situations and to indicate where more work with The Alan Turing Institute is needed.<\/p>\n<p>Glen Hart, technical lead for <abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This was, in effect, a data-centric hackathon where the brightest minds tackled some of the biggest data issues for defence today.
