{"id":89410,"date":"2018-02-27T12:30:08","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T12:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=aaac6f1f1a6bb7a42ce184c27e7321b6"},"modified":"2018-02-27T12:30:08","modified_gmt":"2018-02-27T12:30:08","slug":"news-story-automated-cleaning-of-surgical-instruments-apply-for-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=89410","title":{"rendered":"News story: Automated cleaning of surgical instruments: apply for funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.healthscotland.scot\/\">NHS in Scotland<\/a> &#8211; supported by the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scottishenterprise.com\/CAN-DO-INNOVATION-CHALLENGE-FUND\">Can Do Innovation Challenge Fund<\/a> &#8211; has up to \u00a3150,000 to invest in studies that look at new ways of automating the pre-cleaning of surgical instruments.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"importance-of-pre-cleaning\">Importance of pre-cleaning<\/h2>\n<p>Surgical instruments must be properly cleaned, inspected and sterilised within the sterile services process before each use.<\/p>\n<p>Most existing procedures rely on manual cleaning. This is because current, automated pre-cleaning systems have a limited focus on one specific area, such as neurological surgery. They are also not designed for a range of instruments.<\/p>\n<p>Improvements to automated systems could tackle clinical, health, safety and environmental concerns, improve efficiency and reduce costs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/innovate-uk-health-and-life-sciences\">Find out more about how Innovate UK supports innovation in health and life sciences.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"solutions-must-reduce-cost-and-waste\">Solutions must reduce cost and waste<\/h2>\n<p>The competition aims to find a solution for automated pre-cleaning that reduces costs and waste, is easy to operate and connects with existing NHS equipment. It must include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pre-soaking and internal flushing<\/li>\n<li>automated chemical dosing<\/li>\n<li>coarse-contamination removal, ideally ultrasonics or a spray function<\/li>\n<li>fully programmable pre-cleaning steps<\/li>\n<li>measurement and monitoring<\/li>\n<li>integration with automated washers or washer-disinfectors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Funding of \u00a3150,000 is for a series of feasibility studies.
