The 70 years of <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> innovation mission was designed to show examples of exciting new approaches, systems and services.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"healthcare-in-india\">Healthcare in India<\/h2>\n<p>India\u2019s healthcare market is estimated to <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/home.kpmg.com\/in\/en\/home\/insights\/2016\/04\/report-on-service-sector-ges2016.html\">grow to US$280 billion by 2020<\/a> according to KPMG. The government health service spends only <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SH.XPD.PUBL.ZS?locations=IN\">1.4% of <abbr title=\"gross domestic product\">GDP<\/abbr><\/a> on healthcare service. The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SH.XPD.PUBL.ZS?locations=IN\">4.7% of <abbr title=\"gross domestic product\">GDP<\/abbr><\/a> spent on healthcare overall reflects the out of pocket expenditure most Indians make.<\/p>\n<p>Private medications and services are provided by some excellent leading healthcare companies as well as a fragmented collection of smaller providers of varying quality.<\/p>\n<p>Innovative healthcare solutions are needed due to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the dramatic rise in non-communicable diseases (NCD\u2019s), especially diabetes and heart disease<\/li>\n<li>an ageing population<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"healthcare-uk-mission\">Healthcare UK mission<\/h2>\n<p>3 <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> Trusts and 11 UK healthcare companies took part in the mission, seeking commercial opportunities to work with the Indian healthcare industry. They were led by Sir Malcolm Grant, Chair of <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> England, Sarah Wilkinson, CEO of <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> Digital and Deborah Kobewka, Managing Director of Healthcare UK.<\/p>\n<p>The 3 <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> trusts had innovative training and consultancy offers including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a proton therapy school<\/li>\n<li>cardio-thoracic robotic surgery<\/li>\n<li>the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.genomicsengland.co.uk\/the-100000-genomes-project\/\">100,000 genomes project<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>a collaboration with Google\u2019s <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.com\/\">Deep Mind<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Deborah Kobewka said of the event:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This was remarkably successful mission, supported by our VIPs, where carefully selected UK companies and <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> Trusts had specific requests for their services from most of the Indian healthcare companies we met in the 3 cities<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"mission-highlights\">Mission highlights<\/h2>\n<p>Highlights of the mission included joining the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/india-uk-createch-summit-produces-58-million-in-commercial-deals\">India UK Createch 2018 Summit in Mumbai<\/a> addressed by HRH The Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex.<\/p>\n<p>At this event, future creative technology in healthcare featured alongside the future of transport, space travel, music and film. Another highlight was meeting the Honourable Minister of Health and Family Welfare for Maharashtra, India\u2019s most popular state with over 114 million inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Malcolm Grant also met with the national Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and companion ministries to discuss the Indo UK Institute of Health\u2019s programme to build 11 major hospitals and medicities alongside up to 5,000 diagnostic and treatment clinics.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"response-from-india\">Response from India<\/h2>\n<p>The delegation met senior healthcare leaders from both private and government sectors in a series of round tables, seminars and networking receptions in Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad.
