{"id":90183,"date":"2018-03-20T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-20T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=36771fd1d07df4f7e9c8ca51afbd47b5"},"modified":"2018-05-19T23:00:02","modified_gmt":"2018-05-19T23:00:02","slug":"news-story-mot-changes-20-may-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=90183","title":{"rendered":"News story: MOT rule changes: 20 May 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated:<\/em> Added a link to the eligibility criteria for historic vehicles to be exempt from needing an MOT.<\/p>\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The way that the MOT test works in England, Scotland and Wales changed on Sunday 20 May 2018.<\/p>\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n<p>The MOT test works differently in <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nidirect.gov.uk\/information-and-services\/mot-and-vehicle-testing\/about-mot-scheme\">Northern Ireland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The changes affect cars, vans, motorcycles and other light passenger vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>There are 5 main changes you need to know.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"defects-are-categorised-differently\">1. Defects are categorised differently<\/h2>\n<p>Defects found during the MOT are categorised as either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>dangerous<\/li>\n<li>major<\/li>\n<li>minor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The category the MOT tester gives each item will depend on the type of problem and how serious it is.<\/p>\n<p>MOT testers will still give advice about items you need to monitor. These are known as \u2018advisories\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-the-new-categories-mean\">What the new categories mean<\/h3>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Item result<\/th>\n<th>What it means about the item<\/th>\n<th>How it affects your MOT result<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Dangerous<\/td>\n<td>A direct and immediate risk to road safety or has a serious impact on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Do not drive the vehicle until it\u2019s been repaired.<\/td>\n<td>Fail<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Major<\/td>\n<td>It may affect the vehicle\u2019s safety, put other road users at risk or have an impact on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Repair it immediately.<\/td>\n<td>Fail<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Minor<\/td>\n<td>No significant effect on the safety of the vehicle or impact on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Repair as soon as possible.<\/td>\n<td>Pass<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Advisory<\/td>\n<td>It could become more serious in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Monitor and repair it if necessary.<\/td>\n<td>Pass<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Pass<\/td>\n<td>It meets the minimum legal standard.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure it continues to meet the standard.<\/td>\n<td>Pass<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2 id=\"stricter-rules-for-diesel-car-emissions\">2. Stricter rules for diesel car emissions<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/72921\/diesel-exhaust.png\" alt=\"Diesel exhaust\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>There are stricter limits for emissions from diesel cars with a diesel particulate filter (<abbr title=\"diesel particulate filter\">DPF<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>A <abbr title=\"diesel particulate filter\">DPF<\/abbr> captures and stores exhaust soot to reduce emissions from diesel cars.<\/p>\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\" class=\"application-notice info-notice\">\n<p>Check your car\u2019s handbook if you don\u2019t know if your car has a <abbr title=\"diesel particulate filter\">DPF<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Your vehicle will get a major fault if the MOT tester:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>can see smoke of any colour coming from the exhaust<\/li>\n<li>finds evidence that the <abbr title=\"diesel particulate filter\">DPF<\/abbr> has been tampered with<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"some-new-things-are-included-in-the-mot\">3. Some new things are included in the MOT<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/72922\/daytime-running-light.png\" alt=\"Daytime running lights on a car\"><\/div><figcaption>Daytime running lights will be checked on vehicles first used from 1 March 2018.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some new items are tested during the MOT.<\/p>\n<p>They include checking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>if tyres are obviously underinflated<\/li>\n<li>if the brake fluid has been contaminated<\/li>\n<li>for fluid leaks posing an environmental risk<\/li>\n<li>brake pad warning lights and if brake pads or discs are missing<\/li>\n<li>reversing lights on vehicles first used from 1 September 2009<\/li>\n<li>headlight washers on vehicles first used from 1 September 2009 (if they have them)<\/li>\n<li>daytime running lights on vehicles first used from 1 March 2018 (most of these vehicles will have their first MOT in 2021 when they\u2019re 3 years old)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are other smaller changes to how some items are checked. Your MOT centre will be able to tell you about these.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-mot-certificate-will-change\">4. The MOT certificate will change<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/72923\/mot-certificate-old-and-new.png\" alt=\"Current and new MOT certificate design\"><\/div><figcaption>The current MOT test certificate (left) will change to a new style (right) to list the new types of defects.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The design of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/mot-test-pass-certificate-samples\">MOT certificate<\/a> has changed.<\/p>\n<p>It lists any defects under the new categories, so they\u2019re clear and easy to understand.<\/p>\n<p>The service to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/check-mot-history\">check the MOT history of a vehicle<\/a> has been updated to reflect the changes.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"some-vehicles-over-40-years-old-wont-need-an-mot\">5. Some vehicles over 40 years old won\u2019t need an MOT<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/72924\/classic-car.jpg\" alt=\"Headlight of a classic car\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Cars, vans, motorcycles and other light passenger vehicles won\u2019t need to have an MOT if they\u2019re over 40 years old and have not been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/historic-classic-vehicles-mot-exemption-criteria\/historic-classic-vehicles-mot-exemption-criteria\">substantially changed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, only vehicles first built before 1960 were exempt from needing an MOT.<\/p>\n<p>Now the rules have changed, vehicles won\u2019t need an MOT from the 40th anniversary of when they were registered or manufactured. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/check-mot-history\">check the date the vehicle was registered<\/a> online.<\/p>\n<div class=\"example\">\n<h4 id=\"example\">Example<\/h4>\n<p>If a car was first registered on 31 May 1978, it won\u2019t need an MOT from 31 May 2018.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>You won\u2019t have to apply to stop getting an MOT for your vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>However, each time you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/historic-vehicles\/renewing-vehicle-tax\">tax your historic vehicle<\/a> (even if you don\u2019t pay a fee), you\u2019ll have to declare it meets the rules for not needing an MOT.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"more-information\">More information<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/getting-an-mot\/mot-test-fees\">maximum fees<\/a> MOT centres can charge won\u2019t change.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2018, the government decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/first-mot-test-to-remain-at-3-years-to-protect-road-safety\">keep the age a vehicle needs its first MOT at 3 years<\/a>, rather than extend it to 4 years.<\/p>\n<p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/mot-reminder\">get a free MOT reminder<\/a> by text message or email a month before your MOT is due.<\/p>\n<div role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Help\" class=\"application-notice help-notice\">\n<p>You can be fined up to \u00a31,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The MOT test changed on 20 May 2018, with new defect types, stricter rules for diesel car emissions, and some vehicles over 40 years old becoming exempt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/90183"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=90183"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/90183\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":92095,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/90183\/revisions\/92095"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=90183"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=90183"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=90183"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
