{"id":90563,"date":"2018-03-29T12:52:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-29T12:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=36eff3980c0eaf521c60894ccded4654"},"modified":"2018-03-29T12:52:00","modified_gmt":"2018-03-29T12:52:00","slug":"news-story-cma-puts-vulnerable-consumers-at-the-heart-of-its-annual-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=90563","title":{"rendered":"News story: CMA puts vulnerable consumers at the heart of its annual plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The plan, which follows a period of consultation, builds on existing work in areas such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/cma-cases\/online-hotel-booking\">online hotel booking<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/cma-cases\/secondary-ticketing-websites\">secondary ticketing<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/cma-cases\/care-homes-consumer-protection-case\">care homes<\/a>, as well as ambitious enforcement cases in markets such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/cma-cases\/online-gambling\">online gambling<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/cma-cases\/online-gambling\">supply of essential medicines to the NHS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr> will also make sure it keeps pace with digital advances to protect people from illegal and unfair online practices by expanding its digital analysis capabilities and establishing a new Digital, Data and Technology team. This will ensure that it can respond rapidly to developments including the use of algorithms and artificial intelligence to illegally fix prices or distort how markets work.<\/p>\n<p>As it looks ahead to the UK\u2019s exit from the EU, the plan sets out that the <abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr> is preparing for an increased role in the review of UK aspects of global mergers and international competition enforcement investigations. This includes significantly expanding its capacity and playing an even bigger role on the world stage. The <abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr> will also increase its presence and capabilities outside London by opening a new, expanded Edinburgh office, ensuring that it is keeping in closer touch with markets and consumer issues in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Andrea Coscelli, <abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr> Chief Executive, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Competition gives shoppers more choice and the power to demand a better deal. It stimulates innovation and ensures businesses make better use of their resources.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 12 months, <abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr> has continued to demonstrate its commitment to promoting competition and protecting consumers\u2019 rights, in particular for the most vulnerable, and making sure they get a fair deal from businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We look ahead to a period of opportunity and transformation, for the <abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr> and the competition and consumer regimes.
