{"id":90830,"date":"2018-04-06T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-06T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=b14356cd59d124f0b96fd44a7a6d967b"},"modified":"2018-04-06T15:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-04-06T15:00:00","slug":"press-release-environment-minister-visits-uganda-ahead-of-the-commonwealth-heads-of-government-meeting-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=90830","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Environment Minister visits Uganda ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Environment Minister Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Coffey\u2019s visit to Uganda on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 April comes a fortnight before the start of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (<abbr title=\"Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting\">CHOGM<\/abbr>) to be held in London on 19 to 20 April 2018.<\/p>\n<p>During the Minister\u2019s visit to Uganda she met Dr Mary Kitutu, the Ugandan State Minister for the Environment. They discussed the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/topical-events\/commonwealth-heads-of-government-meeting-2018\">Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (<abbr title=\"Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting\">CHOGM<\/abbr>)<\/a> as an opportunity for countries to work together to tackle environmental issues such as marine plastics under the <abbr title=\"Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting\">CHOGM<\/abbr> ambition of \u2018Delivering a Sustainable Future\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>At the Uganda Breweries Limited brewery in Luzira, owned by Diageo a leading British beverage firm, she saw the brewery\u2019s work to reduce their impact on the environment through reducing waste and improving recycling.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister also met Ugandan Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sam Kutesa and visited the Nile Basin Initiative secretariat in Entebbe.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst in Uganda, she spent time at Murchison Falls National Park to understand more about how the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) are working to protect Uganda\u2019s diverse wildlife and ecosystems. She met UWA rangers who have benefited from anti-poacher training provided by the UK Military and visited the park in the same week that the UK Environment Secretary, Michael Gove, announced that the UK would introduce a ban on ivory sales. The Minister highlighted UK\u2019s ambition to deliver a step change in the global fight against the illegal wildlife trade as a transnational crime and threat to endangered species.
