{"id":90862,"date":"2018-04-10T12:02:55","date_gmt":"2018-04-10T12:02:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=543b3022bb25d631ac60f3fb5aacf8b9"},"modified":"2018-04-10T12:02:55","modified_gmt":"2018-04-10T12:02:55","slug":"news-story-promoting-the-uk-as-an-investment-destination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=90862","title":{"rendered":"News story: Promoting the UK as an investment destination"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Chief Secretary is this week visiting Bras\u00edlia, S\u00e3o Paulo and Santiago for bilateral meetings with ministers and will follow-up on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/uk-brazil-2nd-economic-and-financial-dialogue-policy-outcomes\">second UK-Brazil Economic and Financial Dialogue (<abbr title=\"Economic and Financial Dialogue\">EFD<\/abbr>)<\/a>, particularly on infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil is the eighth largest economy in the world and Chile is the most open economy in South America, a leading advocate of free trade in the region, and a founding member of the Pacific Alliance group which champions free trade.<\/p>\n<p>Latest figures show that bilateral trade between UK and Brazil is worth \u00a35.4 billion a year while trade between the UK and Chile is \u00a31.6 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore it is vitally important that the UK government engages with our partners in these regions and builds on our existing relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Elizabeth Truss said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This year we have seen record investment in the UK and rising exports to destinations around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Latin America is a massive growth market. Countries like Brazil and Chile are reforming their economies and want to grow and trade.<\/p>\n<p>I am visiting this week to strengthen our links, meet businesses and investors and promote the free enterprise message.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">And as we leave the European Union and establish an independent trade policy we will be able to negotiate new trade agreements with major trading partners, like Brazil and Chile.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In Brazil, the Chief Secretary will visit the GSK-Butantan Centre of Excellence. One of the largest biomedical research centres in the world, responsible for 51% of Brazil\u2019s vaccine production. UK-based pharmaceutical giant GSK and the S\u00e3o Paulo State Research Foundation (<abbr title=\"S\u00e3o Paulo State Research Foundation\">FAPESP<\/abbr>) partnered to fund the Centre of Excellence together in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>She will also visit the University of Sao Paulo to visit the Shell Lab where the UK has collaborated with the University on a number of projects.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, she will give a speech to the Instituto Millenium, one of Brazil\u2019s biggest think-tanks, on the importance of free enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>The Chief Secretary will discuss the next steps of the <abbr title=\"Economic and Financial Dialogue\">EFD<\/abbr>, including British support for Brazil joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (<abbr title=\"Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development\">OECD<\/abbr>) which is a fundamental part of the <abbr title=\"Economic and Financial Dialogue\">EFD<\/abbr>, and working towards agreeing a UK-Brazil Double Taxation Agreement, a top ask from British businesses.<\/p>\n<p>As well as meeting Chilean government counterparts \u2013 in particular to compare approaches to fiscal policy \u2013 the Chief Secretary will host a roundtable with leading Chilean businesses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Elizabeth Truss visits Latin America to build relationships with Brazil and Chile.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/90862"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=90862"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/90862\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=90862"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=90862"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=90862"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
