{"id":90951,"date":"2018-04-12T09:07:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T09:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=a96ba03f0f979efa6ffdc3bc60f1501e"},"modified":"2018-04-12T09:07:00","modified_gmt":"2018-04-12T09:07:00","slug":"news-story-make-sure-you-know-where-your-charity-donations-are-going","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=90951","title":{"rendered":"News story: Make sure you know where your charity donations are going"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Giving to charity is a longstanding and important tradition, and the British public are generous when it comes to supporting charitable causes.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, that generosity can sometimes be undermined by those who seek to intercept charitable funds for their own gain.<\/p>\n<p>We want to help donors know how to spot a genuine registered charity.<\/p>\n<p>By making simple checks part of the routine of donating, we can all become smarter and more conscious donors, and help promote public trust in the sector as a whole.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_HVAK31-7a8\">Safer giving video<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"advice-for-the-public\">Advice for the public<\/h3>\n<p>Do not be put off supporting the important work of charities, but make sure you are safely giving to genuine charity collectors by following our steps to safer giving:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>before giving, check the charity\u2019s name and registration number on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-charity-information\">our register<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>be more cautious about people collecting for general charitable causes, such as \u2018it\u2019s for local sick children\u2019- make more enquiries about what exactly the money would be used for and by who<\/li>\n<li>when approached by collectors, check whether they are wearing a proper ID badge and that any collection tin is sealed and that it is not damaged<\/li>\n<li>if in doubt, ask the collector for more information &#8211; a genuine fundraiser should be happy to answer questions and explain more about the work of the charity<\/li>\n<li>check a collector has a license to fundraise with the local authority or has the consent of the private site owner<\/li>\n<li>check that the charity follows the Fundraising Regulator\u2019s guidance and Code of Fundraising Practice<\/li>\n<li>carefully review collection bags for clothing and household goods to find out whether they are from a genuine charity<\/li>\n<li>never feel under pressure by a fundraiser into making a donation immediately<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"safer-giving-online-donation-tips\">Safer giving online donation tips<\/h3>\n<p>Apply the same checks online as you would in person, but also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be wary of unsolicited emails from charities you have never heard of or have no association with<\/li>\n<li>don\u2019t click on links contained in emails \u2013 instead search online for your chosen charity to check you have the right web address and donate directly to them<\/li>\n<li>check there is a padlock symbol in the URL bar and that the web address starts with \u2018https\u2019<\/li>\n<li>make sure the charity is genuine before giving any financial information and never share your pin number<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After making these checks, if you think that a collection or appeal is not legitimate, report it to the police; and if you think the collection is fraudulent report it to <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.actionfraud.police.uk\/\">Action Fraud<\/a> through their website or call them on 0300 123 2040.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you think a collector does not have a licence &#8211; report it to the relevant Local Authority Licensing Team or the Metropolitan Police (if in Greater London).
