{"id":92043,"date":"2018-05-17T15:12:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-17T15:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=d8c50bb8febcdf6206d8725a010ff6b6"},"modified":"2018-05-17T15:12:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-17T15:12:00","slug":"news-story-robotics-and-ai-for-safer-work-apply-for-residental-and-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=92043","title":{"rendered":"News story: Robotics and AI for safer work: apply for residential and funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Innovate UK, part of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/\">UK Research and Innovation<\/a>, has up to \u00a315 million for businesses and researchers to collaborate on robotic and artificial intelligence (AI) systems that support safer work for people.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to develop technologies and systems that take people out of the inspection, maintenance and repair of infrastructure in extreme environments and make unmanned operations the standard approach.<\/p>\n<p>The competition will do this by bringing industry and research together to work collaboratively, come up with ideas for research and innovation projects and apply for funding.<\/p>\n<p>It is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/industrial-strategy-challenge-fund-joint-research-and-innovation\">Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund<\/a> for robots for a safer world \u2013 a \u00a393 million investment by government to develop robotics and AI solutions in areas such as off-shore energy, nuclear energy, mining and space.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/robots-for-a-safer-world-industrial-strategy-challenge-fund\">Find out more about the robots for a safer world challenge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"competition-run-in-2-stages\">Competition run in 2 stages<\/h2>\n<p>This competition is being run in 2 stages.<\/p>\n<p>In the first, we are inviting individuals to apply on behalf of their business to attend a 5-day residential innovation lab in September 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The innovation lab will allow delegates to work in teams to generate innovative and commercially-viable ideas. It will use creative thinking techniques and activities to help evolve a common language and thinking and enable the sharing of understanding and expertise.<\/p>\n<p>We are particularly interested in individuals that can contribute constructively and enthusiastically in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>robotic structural capabilities<\/li>\n<li>reformable structures<\/li>\n<li>long-range and beyond visual line-of-sight operations<\/li>\n<li>electronics, sensors and photonics for extreme environments<\/li>\n<li>AI, autonomy and situational awareness<\/li>\n<li>mission planning and risk management<\/li>\n<li>systems engineering, including methodologies, verification and validation tools<\/li>\n<li>security, reliability, safety and trust<\/li>\n<li>collaborative robotics and AI systems<\/li>\n<li>long endurance operations<\/li>\n<li>modules that support increased dexterity<\/li>\n<li>locomotion platforms that work extreme environments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By the end of the lab with your team you will have developed a joint proposal for a research and innovation project.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"proposal-development\">Proposal development<\/h2>\n<p>In the second stage of the competition, teams that attended the innovation lab will have the opportunity to apply for a share of up to \u00a315 million grant funding for their project.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses will have 3 weeks to work with their partners to further develop, finalise and submit their proposals. Final proposals must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>make unmanned operations the standard for inspecting, maintaining and repairing physical infrastructures<\/li>\n<li>focus on infrastructure in areas such as off-shore energy, nuclear energy, mining and space<\/li>\n<li>focus on technologies that operate safely and efficiently over long periods of time, and without the need for maintenance<\/li>\n<li>follow appropriate industry standards and system engineering principles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only those who attend the residential innovation lab and meet the assessment criteria will be eligible to submit a proposal for funding.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"competition-information\">Competition information<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>the competition opens on 21 May 2018, and the deadline for applications is 11 July 2018<\/li>\n<li>we are seeking between 20 and 30 individuals to attend the innovation lab<\/li>\n<li>individuals must have the right skills, expertise and experience and apply on behalf of an organisation. This organisation must be:\n<ul>\n<li>a business, academic, charity, public sector or research and technology organisation<\/li>\n<li>based in the UK and intend to carry out the project and exploit the results here<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>successful applicants will need to be available from 10 September to 14 September 2018 to attend the innovation lab.
