{"id":92166,"date":"2018-05-22T10:47:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-22T10:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=75524116919657b91c23f6fe255d3528"},"modified":"2018-05-22T10:47:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-22T10:47:00","slug":"news-story-30-million-of-funding-to-tackle-antimicrobial-resistance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=92166","title":{"rendered":"News story: \u00a330 million of funding to tackle antimicrobial resistance"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The funding will be delivered through 4 new projects as part of the Global <abbr title=\"antimicrobial resistance\">AMR<\/abbr> Innovation Fund (<abbr title=\"Global AMR Innovation Fund\">GAMRIF<\/abbr>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>\u00a320 million to the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/carb-x.org\/carb-x-news\/uk-government-and-bill-melinda-gates-foundation-join-carb-x-partnership-in-fight-against-superbugs\/\">Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Biopharmaceutical Accelerator<\/a> \u2013 a non-profit international partnership supporting research on the most dangerous drug-resistant bacteria. This commitment will support scientific research around the world to develop new vaccines and alternatives-to-antibiotics against drug-resistant bacterial infections in humans<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>\u00a35 million for a new <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/healthmedia.blog.gov.uk\/2018\/05\/22\/uk-argentina-join-forces-to-combat-amr\/\">bilateral partnership with Argentina<\/a> supporting research to tackle <abbr title=\"antimicrobial resistance\">AMR<\/abbr> in agriculture and the impact on the environment \u2013 delivered via the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council. The bilateral partnership will be delivered and matched-funded, on a resource basis, by the National Scientific and Technical Research Council in Argentina<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>\u00a35 million invested in the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.finddx.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PR_FIND-GAMRIF_FINAL-22.05.2018.pdf\">Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics\">FIND<\/abbr>) \u2013 a global non-profit organisation aimed at the development, evaluation and delivery of high-quality affordable diagnostic tests for poverty-related diseases. This funding will support <abbr title=\"Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics\">FIND<\/abbr>\u2019s work to enhance the impact of diagnostic tools, in particular the connectivity of point-of-care diagnostics for <abbr title=\"antimicrobial resistance\">AMR<\/abbr> surveillance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>\u00a31 million invested in the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gardp.org\/2018\/news-resources\/press-releases\/gardp-efforts-drug-resistant-gonorrhoea-treatment-boost-from-ukgovernment\">Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership\">GARDP<\/abbr>) \u2013 a non-profit research and development initiative addressing global public health needs by developing, delivering and assuring sustainable access of new or improved antibiotic treatments. This funding will support <abbr title=\"Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership\">GARDP<\/abbr>\u2019s programme on sexually transmitted infections, focusing on the development of a new antibiotic for drug-resistant gonorrhea<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These projects are funded by UK aid and will primarily benefit people in low- and middle-income countries, where the burden of infection is greatest.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"antimicrobial resistance\">AMR<\/abbr> occurs when microbes, including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, no longer respond to the drugs that would normally kill them, such as antibiotics. This leaves us powerless to treat what are normally routine infections. It is estimated that 5,000 deaths are caused every year in the UK because antibiotics no longer work for some infections.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Dame Sally Davies, England\u2019s Chief Medical Officer, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Today\u2019s announcement is further evidence of the UK collaborating with international partners to lead global efforts to tackle <abbr title=\"antimicrobial resistance\">AMR<\/abbr>. The <abbr title=\"Global AMR Innovation Fund\">GAMRIF<\/abbr> investments aim to protect the world\u2019s most vulnerable and tackle <abbr title=\"antimicrobial resistance\">AMR<\/abbr> where the burden of infection is greatest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I am pleased that the UK will be working in partnership with a range of leading organisations to deliver vital research activities across the OneHealth spectrum \u2013 together this represents a formidable force against the threat of superbugs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Health and Social Care Secretary Jeremy Hunt said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Antimicrobial resistance is no longer a threat of the future \u2013 it is a problem here and now, and one that is killing hundreds of thousands of people across the world each year.
