{"id":92611,"date":"2018-06-07T08:30:12","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T08:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=446aed098600d806eb0578e35c765215"},"modified":"2018-06-07T08:30:12","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T08:30:12","slug":"news-story-tough-regulations-brought-in-to-crack-down-on-emissions-cheats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=92611","title":{"rendered":"News story: Tough regulations brought in to crack down on emissions cheats"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Carmakers will face heavy fines if they supply vehicles designed to cheat emissions tests to the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>, the government announced today (7 June 2018).<\/p>\n<p>Under tough new regulations, manufacturers could be forced to pay up to \u00a350,000 for each new vehicle found to be fitted with a so-called \u2018defeat device\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The rules have been brought in following a government consultation which saw overwhelming support for measures to crack down on emissions cheats.<\/p>\n<p>This comes following the publication of the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/air-quality-draft-clean-air-strategy-2018\">Clean Air Strategy<\/a>, which set out a range of measures to tackle air pollution. And the government will outline further steps as part of its Road to Zero Strategy, which will set out how the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> will transition to zero emission vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Minister Jesse Norman said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>There has rightly been a huge public outcry against car manufacturers that have been cheating on emissions standards. Their behaviour has been dishonest and deplorable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">These tough new regulations are designed to ensure that those who cheat will be held to proper account in this country, legally and financially, for their actions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Road Vehicles (Defeat Device, Fuel Consumption and Type Approval) Regulations 2018 will be laid in Parliament before coming into force on 1 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p>This announcement comes alongside the government\u2019s commitment to end the sale of conventional new diesel and petrol cars and vans by 2040 and follows the publication of the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u2019s air quality plan for nitrogen dioxide (<abbr title=\"nitrogen dioxide\">NO2<\/abbr>) last year.<\/p>\n<p>Following revelations in 2015 that Volkswagen had been using software which caused their car engines to behave differently during emissions tests, the Department for Transport tested a range of the most popular diesel vehicles in the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>.
