The events are aimed at inspiring people of<br \/>\nall ages and backgrounds to participate in democracy and will be organised by charities and community groups across the country.<\/p>\n<p>This festival of democracy is being held in July to coincide with and celebrate the 90th<br \/>\nanniversary of the 1928 Equal Franchise Act &#8211; a further historic constitutional milestone<br \/>\nwhich granted equal voting rights to men and women.<\/p>\n<p>Proceedings will kick off on the 2 July in Manchester, with the first ever National Democracy<br \/>\nAwards at the People\u2019s Museum. The Awards will recognise the exceptional service of those<br \/>\nwho work tirelessly to increase democratic engagement in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for the Constitution, Chloe Smith MP said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This is a UK-wide festival to celebrate 90 years of equal democratic rights for women and<br \/>\nmen. I\u2019d encourage everyone to join in National Democracy Week and participate in an<br \/>\nactivity in their local area. Putting on an event in your local scout hut, school hall or<br \/>\ncommunity centre is a great way to celebrate and get your local community involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Our democracy should be inclusive of everyone in society. We hope the fantastic events<br \/>\nbeing held around the country will inform, include and inspire people of all backgrounds to<br \/>\nparticipate in our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>During the week, organisations around the country will hold a wide variety of events,<br \/>\nincluding:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Shout Out UK will host a \u2018Women In Politics Hackathon\u2019 inviting up to 100 young<br \/>\nwomen, including influential figures across parties, to come together and tackle the<br \/>\nissue of representation in politics.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>UpRising, the British Red Cross and the Refugee Council are hosting \u2018Our Voice\u2019, a<br \/>\nyouth-led event focused on refugee and asylum seeker issues in Birmingham and<br \/>\nBedford.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Faith Forums for London will deliver a five day Civic and Democracy Leadership<br \/>\nProgramme equipping young leaders to participate and engage with our Democracy.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The Patchwork Foundation is hosting an event to promote positive integration of<br \/>\nunder-represented, deprived and minority communities into British democracy and<br \/>\ncivil society.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over 25 events have been confirmed in eight cities throughout the UK and more are being<br \/>\nadded all the time.
