It affects all varieties of common and ornamental carp species (Cyprinus carpio) and can result in large scale mortalities.<br \/>\nFish with <abbr title=\"Koi herpesvirus\">KHV<\/abbr> disease may show the following signs, especially when water temperatures are between 16 to 28 \u00b0C:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>necrotic (white or brown) patches on the gills<\/li>\n<li>rough patches on the skin and sloughing mucous<\/li>\n<li>sunken eyes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/groups\/fish-health-inspectorate#contact\">contact the <abbr title=\"Fish Health Inspectorate\">FHI<\/abbr><\/a> if you suspect an outbreak of <abbr title=\"Koi herpesvirus\">KHV<\/abbr>. This includes fish with the above signs, or deaths of carp or carp hybrids.<\/p>\n<p>There is no risk to public health.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"new-outbreaks\">New outbreaks<\/h2>\n<p>When laboratory testing confirms <abbr title=\"Koi herpesvirus\">KHV<\/abbr> disease at a site, the <abbr title=\"Fish Health Inspectorate\">FHI<\/abbr> place statutory controls to limit the spread of the disease. The UK maintains a surveillance programme for this disease.<\/p>\n<p>When the <abbr title=\"Fish Health Inspectorate\">FHI<\/abbr> confirm an outbreak, they take steps to control and, wherever possible, remove the disease.
