The North Shields-based business, founded in 2013, will use the Quilt Market Houston trade show to unveil its new \u2018Tessepatch\u2019 range to the US market.<\/p>\n

Craft Yourself Silly<\/a> found early success through its use of a traditional North East craft method known as \u2019proggy rag rugging\u2019, where scraps of material are pushed through holes in a woven fabric.<\/p>\n

Today, it manufactures DIY kits that allow crafters to use the traditional \u2019proggy\u2018 technique to make soft toy animals, fabric accessories and decorations, selling its products online and in stores like Hobbycraft, as well as in a major US craft retail chain.<\/p>\n

In 2014, the firm won a \u00a3300,000 contract from JOANN, one of the largest chains of craft and hobby stores in the US, after receiving support from the Department for International Trade (DIT<\/abbr>) to showcase its products at the Creativation trade show in Phoenix, Arizona.<\/p>\n

The firm\u2019s products are now stocked in 865 JOANN stores across 49 US states. Last year, exporting accounted for almost a third of the company\u2019s total revenue.<\/p>\n

Founder and Managing Director Hayley Smith said:<\/p>\n

In the UK, the craft and hobby market is worth around \u00a34 billion every year, while in the US, the value of the market is 10 times that size.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve managed to tap into that demand with great success. But the process hasn\u2019t been without its hurdles. After securing our contract with JOANN, we found ourselves needing to fill shipping containers instead of pallet crates and had to very quickly get to grips with US customs processes, labelling requirements, and safety standards. We also needed to learn about variations in laws and regulations, which can differ from state to state.<\/p>\n

DIT<\/abbr> was on-hand to help us at every step of the way, offering expertise and guidance to make everything as smooth as possible, in addition to introductions to new suppliers.<\/p>\n

My advice to anyone thinking about exporting for the first time is to get in touch with DIT<\/abbr> at the earliest opportunity \u2013 the team knows what opportunities exist in different markets, and what support is available to help you get there.
