The campaign is part of the government\u2019s Year of Engineering, which is working with partners across the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> to bring young people face to face with engineering experiences and role models \u2013 transforming perceptions of the profession and tackling a major shortage of engineers in the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/77210\/960-yoe-peake-experiment-01.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Peake and children recreate an experiment to understand more about the surface of planets.\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Launching the campaign, Tim Peake joined <abbr title=\"Doctor\">Dr<\/abbr> Suzie Imber (Associate Professor of Space Physics at the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/le.ac.uk\">University of Leicester<\/a> and winner of <abbr title=\"British Broadcasting Corporation\">BBC<\/abbr> 2 show \u2018Astronauts: do you have what it takes?\u2019) to show schoolchildren the vital role engineers play in the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u2019s growing space industry.<\/p>\n<p>Students were given the chance to recreate an experiment that helps us understand more about the surface of planets, and learnt about the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/departments\/physics\/research\/src\/Missions\/bepicolombo\/mecury-imaging-x-ray-spectrometer-mixs\">Mercury Imaging X-ray Spectrometer<\/a> which <abbr title=\"Doctor\">Dr<\/abbr> Imber is working on alongside engineers as part of Europe\u2019s first mission to the planet Mercury later this year. Continuing the celebration of feats of engineering, Tim Peake also joined the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> Space Agency as it launched a competition to name a rover which is being sent to Mars to search for signs of life.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/77211\/960-yoe-peake-experiment-02.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Peake and children recreate an experiment to understand how asteroids impact the surface of planets.\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Transport Minister Baroness Sugg said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>From space missions to technology that\u2019s transforming the way we travel, engineers are the driving force behind everything we\u2019re celebrating this week at Farnborough Airshow.<\/p>\n<p>With funding for <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> spaceports announced this week, this is a ground-breaking time for the industry with exciting implications for young people\u2019s career aspirations \u2013 and it\u2019s vital that we show children from all backgrounds how they could be part of the innovations shaping our future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Giving young people chances to create, solve problems and come face to face with engineering achievements and role models is at the heart of the campaign, so I\u2019m delighted to see that in action today as we call on families across the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> to get involved in The Holiday Makers this summer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/77212\/960-yoe-sugg-experiment-01.jpg\" alt=\"Baroness Sugg and children learn about the surface of planets.\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><abbr title=\"Doctor\">Dr<\/abbr> Suzie Imber, from the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/departments\/physics\">University of Leicester\u2019s Department of Physics and Astronomy<\/a>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">It\u2019s always a delight to open young people\u2019s eyes to how exciting engineering and science can be and the government\u2019s Year of Engineering campaign is a fantastic way that scientists like Tim and me can share some of the amazing research that is happening in labs across the country, and the vital role engineers play in this. It\u2019s been great to show them the work that the University of Leicester has done for the BepiColombo mission to Mercury, just one of the many ways that Leicester is establishing itself as the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u2019s space city.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/77224\/960-yoe-imber-presentation-01.jpg\" alt=\"Physicist Dr Suzie Imber explains the BepiColombo mission to Mercury.\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>There are lots of ways for families to get involved, from activities they can do at home or in the garden to workshops, exhibitions and challenges. Weekly challenges will be led by key partners including the <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> and the Science Museum. Children are encouraged to download a journal, collect badges and share what they have been doing for a chance to win some fantastic prizes. Activity ideas, an events map and Holiday Makers journal are all available at the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yearofengineering.gov.uk\/theholidaymakers\">Holiday Makers hub<\/a>, and there will be lots of chances to get involved on social media using #TheHolidayMakers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>Find out more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/astronaut-tim-peake-launches-competition-to-name-exomars-rover\"><abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> Space Agency\u2019s competition to name Mars Rover<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yearofengineering.gov.uk\">Year of Engineering<\/a> is a government campaign that aims to give young people aged 7 to 16 a million direct and inspiring experiences of engineering, challenging traditional perceptions and tackling a lack of diversity in the profession.
