It applies to new concepts as well as testing and improving existing ideas.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-early-stage-design-matters\">Why early-stage design matters<\/h2>\n<p>Thinking about what customers, users and stakeholders need at an early stage can show organisations where to concentrate their effort and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Improving the design process can help to spot flaws, uncover new angles and shed light on what customers are actually doing to inform further research and development.<\/p>\n<p>Previous projects to be awarded grants include \u2018delivering warmth\u2019, which wants to help people heat their homes and manage how much water they use, and a wearable device for infants to monitor their health and allow for faster, more accurate diagnosis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/new-design-innovations-get-up-to-2-million-funding\">Find out more about some of the projects to get funding in an earlier design foundations competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/design-in-innovation-strategy-2015-to-2020\">Find out more about Innovate UK\u2019s commitment to supporting great design in our design in innovation strategy 2015 to 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"what-makes-a-desirable-product\">What makes a desirable product?<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019re looking for projects that explore what people really need from products and services, and what makes them desirable from a customer\u2019s point of view. It could be about a physical product or the design of digital products or services.<\/p>\n<p>Projects should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>identify and address the problems that customers care about<\/li>\n<li>generate ideas for new products, services or business models in line with customer demand<\/li>\n<li>record their findings to support future development and investment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They must follow an established early-stage design process, such as the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.designcouncil.org.uk\/news-opinion\/design-process-what-double-diamond\">Double Diamond model<\/a>, which divides the design process into 4 phases: discover, define, develop and deliver.<\/p>\n<p>Project teams should also include experienced design professionals, either in-house or as part of a collaboration.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/ktn-uk.co.uk\/interests\/design\">Get advice on human-centred design, including how to find a partner and access funding, with the Knowledge Transfer Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"competition-information\">Competition information<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>the competition opens on 13 August 2018 and the deadline for applications is midday on 19 September 2018<\/li>\n<li>UK-based businesses of any size or research and technology organisations can lead a project.
