I should like to express my condolences to the people and Government of Spain on the death of their former Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez, a great democrat and a great leader, who, working with King Juan Carlos I, led Spain along the difficult path from dictatorship to democracy in the 1970s and paved the way for the country to become the modern European nation that it is today.
