Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg visited Greenside Primary School in West London today to support Save the Children’s Read On. Get On. campaign. This aims to ensure that, by 2025, all children leave school with the ability to read well.

The Deputy Prime Minister read a story to 5- and 6-year-old children at the school as part of his promise to help meet the campaign target.

He also spoke to pupils as part of a new campaign called Primary Futures, which aims to help raise the career aspirations of thousands of children in primary schools.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said:

Getting kids to read more is crucial to how they develop – so I’m delighted to support Save the Children’s Read On. Get On. campaign. Their research says that just 10 minutes of reading a day makes a real difference.

The Pupil Premium is also helping schools improve literacy amongst the poorest children, and we have strengthened the requirement for new teachers to understand the theory and teaching of phonics.
