News story: EU consultation of RoHS exemptions

This item was filled under Housing

The European Commission is currently undertaking a consultation exercise relating to three exemptions associated with the RoHS Directive, which is enforced by the National Measurement Office (NMO) in the UK. The exemption requests are:

  • 17a “lead in glass of electronic components and fluorescent tubes, or in electronic ceramic parts (including dielectric ceramic capacitors) used in industrial monitoring & control instruments (only sub-category 9 industrial)”, exemption to expire in 2024
  • 18a “lead used in compliant pin connector systems for use in industrial monitoring and control instruments (only sub-category 9 industrial)”, exemption to expire in 2024
  • 20a “mercury in cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) for back-lighting liquid crystal displays not exceeding 5 mg per lamp used in industrial monitoring and control instruments (only sub-category 9 industrial)”

The three requests were part of a previous project. A stakeholder consultation is necessary to allow review of changes to wording and new information, before revaluation of the requests.

There is also a questionnaire about the consultation, which stakeholders are invited to contribute to.
